📉 Production times cut by more than 75%

That's the impact digital technology is having at Ultimat Defence, a Wigan manufacturer whose specialist training products help prepare police officers, prison staff and military personnel for real-world situations.

With support from Made Smarter, Ultimat invested in a CNC cutting system to automate one of its most labour-intensive production processes, creating a connected digital workflow from design through to manufacture.

The results include:
✅ Cutting preparation times from 28 minutes to 6.5 minutes
✅ Improving cutting productivity by more than 75%
✅ Increasing operational efficiency by an estimated 25%
✅ Reducing PVC waste from 22% to 10%
✅ Creating capacity for new products, exports and future jobs

The investment has also upskilled employees in advanced digital manufacturing techniques while helping the business build the foundations for long-term growth.

We are proud to announce that we have completed the move to a new Design and Manufacture facility on Miry Lane, Wigan - the next chapter after 20+ years based in Bolton.

Over £750,000 reinvested. A brand-new CNC cutting machine. A 50% larger spray booth. More space, more capacity, and more capability for the services we supply in the UK and increasingly overseas.

Proud moment for the team we've been featured in Wigan Today 👏

We've upgraded to a brand-new cutting system at our Ashton-in-Makerfield site, and it's a big step forward in how we manufacture our goods.

What it means looking ahead:

✅ Up to six new jobs on the way
✅ Sharper precision and more capacity across everything we make

Two Wigan borough firms have seen their fortunes improve after embracing upgrades in digital technology

Big shoutout to South Yorkshire Police and Martin Fell this past week 👏 The Ultimat Defence team was invited along to a SPEAR System®(Spontaneous Protection Enabling Accelerated Response) training course, and it's been a really eye-opening few days.

SPEAR System® is the personal safety system developed by self-defence legend Tony Blauer & the S.P.E.A.R. System , used by police forces and military around the world. It teaches officers how to take that instant "flinch" reaction we all have and turn it into a controlled, protective response when things escalate.

To make the training as realistic as possible (without anyone getting hurt!), instructors and students train against each other both wearing Tony Blauer's High Gear padded suits that allow realistic strikes to take place safely.

Training like this is so important. It gives officers on the frontline the confidence and skills to handle dangerous situations, which means safer outcomes for them and for all of us. Proud to be part of it 💙

The team has been on the move this past week. 9 Scenario Training Cars delivered 8 different locations across London.

These aren’t just vehicles. They are controlled Scenario Training environments where officers can train for the moments that actually matter.

With a Scenario Training Car, teams can:
→ Recreate real-world incidents in a safe, repeatable setting
→ Build decision-making under pressure, not just theory
→ Train communication, control, and coordination inside a confined space
→ Make mistakes safely and learn from them immediately

This is training that closes the gap between theory and reality because, when officers step into a live situation, it shouldn’t feel unfamiliar. It should feel like something they’ve already handled.
