Not-for-Profit Community Group Enabling better Attachment and Infant Mental Health through teaching to carry children safely
A not-for-profit community group educating parents, care givers, Early Years practitioners, doulas, midwives, yoga teachers, antenatal educators and hypnobirthing practitioners about the positive affects on Attachment that carrying your children (using a sling, carrier or in-arms) can have and, thereby enabling greater positive infant mental health.
As trained Child Carrying Consultants (trained with Slingababy) and Peer Supporters (and Born to Carry), we help to teach people how to carry their children safety and with greater confidence.
We have an extensive sling library and hold one-to-one Consultations either by Zoom, FaceTime, telephone or in person (according to the Government’s Covid-19 guidelines) at our new head quarters in Norfolk and group Workshops hopefully, when the Coronavirus restrictions enable us to do so once again.
Carrying children helps to build resilience, a buffer against adversity, by encouraging the formation of secure attachment relationships (Dr Rosie Knowles, Carryingmatters.co.uk).
Children with a secure attachment have consistent, loving relationships with their care givers and they know that they can always depend upon them, thereby enabling the child to leave for short periods and to know that the adult will always return.
These in turn enable the child to thrive, the brain to build positive synaptic connections that enable learning to happen more readily. Confidence and self esteem are strong.
However, if attachments built up during the early couple of years of an infants life are insecure, this can lead to stress, an increased cortisone and adrenaline levels, which all affect the brain adversely, turning off the natural fight or flight response and which in time will lead to mental health issues later on in adult life.
Building resilience to adverse life events will help our infants bounce back each time they have a set back and trauma will be
Other reasons to carry your infant include:
Do you need another pair or hands during lockdown? A baby carrier enables you to become hands free so that you are more able to get on with job around or outside the home.
Oxytocin is released, enabling breastfeeding to occur and that lovely feeling that makes you feel great, which in turns aids bonding with the whole family.
Communication is enhanced because your infant is being carried at your head level, which means that you can talk away to your infant all the time. Your child learns your cues from early on and you learn his cues, so can better understand one another and respond more quickly to his needs.
Your infant can see more: Infants who are carried will very quickly dislike being in a buggy as they can not see so much of the world around them.
Saves your back: Pushing a buggy can have a negative impact on your back and our backs become bad at about the age of 12 years old (Nic Aldous, BackCare Clinic) so by the time we have children, our backs are probably already bad. When you use a baby carrier, your centre of gravity is closer, which will help to support your back, as all the weight is evenly distributed across the back in a comfortable, well fitting carrier.
Alleviates Colic, Reflux and painful win. By carrying your infant in an upright position, this will greatly relieve any very painful symptoms.
It may help to alleviate post natal depression.
Using a sling is great exercise and means that you can get outdoors for long walks with the family or the dog. Your body can gently get used to the weight of the baby and your core muscles will be gradually be strengthened as your increase the length of the walk and the baby gets bigger.
Crying is reduced up to 51% according to recent studies.
Looks great: slings come in all different shapes and sizes and gorgeous patterns too! You can buy a different sling to match each outfit.
Cheaper than a buggy.
