💧🚫 From 00:01am on Thursday 27 August, a temporary hosepipe ban will come into effect across our supply area. This follows a drought order issued by the Environment Agency to help protect water resources in the River Severn.

Following months of hot, dry weather, significantly below-average rainfall, low river levels and continued high demand, our water resources are under increasing pressure. These conditions are affecting water supplies for people and the health of river systems and wildlife habitats.

We remain in drought. While rain is forecast this week, it won't make up for months of exceptionally dry weather. Our rivers and water resources need sustained rainfall to recover, so please keep using water wisely.

During the hosepipe ban, you must not use a hosepipe to:

👉 Water your garden
👉 Clean your car, patio or driveway
👉 Fill a paddling pool, swimming pool or hot tub
👉 Clean walls, paths or windows

Help Shape the Future of Adult Social Care: The Big Conversation on Care.

The future of adult social care is being discussed at a national level, and people in Somerset have a chance to help shape it.

The Independent Commission on Adult Social Care, chaired by Baroness Casey of Blackstock, has launched the Big Conversation on Care, a national engagement exercise designed to gather views from people who draw on care and support, unpaid carers, families, care professionals and the wider public.

Town and Parish Councils are trusted voices in their communities and play an important role in helping local people access information and have their say. We are asking you to help share the Big Conversation on Care with:

Residents who draw on care and support
Unpaid carers, families and friends
Community groups and voluntary organisations
Local networks, newsletters and noticeboards
The Commission wants to hear a wide range of experiences and perspectives to help inform its work on the future of adult social care and what a National Care Service in England could look like. The conversation will explore important questions about who care should be for, how families are supported and how care should be funded in the future.

How town and parish councils can help

We would be grateful if you could:

Share details of the Big Conversation on Care through parish newsletters, websites, email bulletins and social media channels.
Add information to community noticeboards, village halls, libraries, community centres and other well-used local spaces.
Raise awareness through council meetings, local forums and community groups.
Encourage residents, unpaid carers and families to share their experiences and views.
Display the campaign posters and flyers where local people are most likely to see them.
Support residents who may need help finding the information online or submitting their views.
Your local knowledge and community connections can help ensure people across Somerset, including those who may not be online or who need extra support to take part, have the opportunity to be heard.

What is the digital phone switchover?

The UK’s telephone network is changing. Between now and 2027 most telephone providers will be moving their customers from old analogue landlines over to new upgraded landline services using digital technology.

This means services that rely on the old landline system such as home phones and healthcare devices will be switched over.

How will it affect me/what do I need to do?
The good news is – your landline isn’t going anywhere and for most consumers and businesses, this change will be straightforward. In fact, many customers are already making the switch when they upgrade to full fibre broadband.

Your telecoms provider such as Virgin Media O2 or BT should contact you before the switchover to check in and discuss what you need to do to make sure your service isn’t affected. However, we’re encouraging everyone to know what to expect.

If you have an internet connection, the change may be as simple as plugging your phone into your broadband router rather than the socket on the wall.

If you have other devices connected to your phone line, such as alarm systems, your alarm service provider might need to upgrade your device to make sure it is compatible. If you are unsure about how a device in your home or business might be affected, it is recommended you contact the equipment supplier or device manufacturer to find out whether it will still work on a digital phone line.

Do you or someone you know depend on their landline and/or use a telecare device connected to a phone line such as a fall monitor, lifeline or personal alarm?

If yes, then please notify the communications provider now (the provider of this service) so that they can advise on how the switch might affect the service of the devices or home phone.

In an emergency
Digital landlines cannot carry a power connection, so in the event of a power cut they will not work. If you have a mobile phone this can still be used, but if you’ve no other means of calling the emergency services your telecoms provider will offer a solution to allow calls to be made to emergency services.

You should tell your telecoms provider now if you have no other way of making emergency calls.
