Two members of RAF Media Reserves have recently returned from a powerful visit to southern Italy where their unit - 614 Squadron - was based during the Second World War.
Flying from airfields in the Foggia region, Wales' only Auxiliary squadron operated as a Pathfinder unit for the Allied Strategic bomber force striking targets across the Balkans and Central Europe.
The squadron was hosted at one of its former airfields at Amendola, which is now a main base for the Italian Air Force. There they operate F35s and MQ9 Reaper RPAS and were shown around these cutting-edge aircraft by their crews.
While in Italy, the squadron stayed in a small coastal town called Manfredonia, 20km from Amendola where squadron members came to relax in wartime when not on duty. In gratitude, the town's mayor hosted the squadron at a civic reception where he said, 'a bond is renewed in the spirit of friendship between peoples and in remembrance of those who are no longer with us, and of those who never returned home. The squadron lost 83 members during its time in Italy.
The squadron spent their final day in Italy at the Commonwealth War Cemetery at Bari where 10 of their fallen lie. There they held an Act of Remembrance, and a wreath was laid on behalf of the squadron of today in gratitude for the sacrifices of the squadron in war. Woollen poppies knitted by the daughter-in-law of one of 614's pilots were placed at each of the 10 graves.
Photographer Cpl Harris documented the squadron's week in southern Italy, while Media Operations Officer, FIt Lt Wade - also the Squadron historian and author of their history -'On Dragons' Wings' was the Staff Ride Facilitator and guide for this historical visit.
