The breath-taking red-brick mansion and ancient yew hedges sit at the heart of a magnificent garden and historic park in the beautiful Bure meadows. The story of the estate unfolds over a thousand years. The landscape with its hedges and narrow tree-lined lanes has changed little over the centuries and is quintessentially Norfolk. Blickling’s owners have used the estate as a place of quiet refuge,

while playing their part on the world’s political stage. Philip Kerr, 11th Marquis of Lothian, left this estate to the National Trust in 1940, and he’s vital to its story. Without him, it’s unlikely that Blickling would still be around for you to explore, along with many other places that you love.

Discover more about KarunThakar's passion for textiles and the origins of his collection.

The 'Journeys' exhibition at Blickling brings together standout pieces from Thakar’s extensive collection to explore themes including migration, trade, craftsmanship, colonialism, global histories and beauty.

Blickling’s associations with commercial enterprise and colonial administration are reframed. Textiles that travelled continents – carrying stories of identity, exchange and transformation – take centre stage, showing how global connections shaped the estate.

Visit to see a curated selection of star objects on show, including Japanese kimonos, Punjabi baghs and kanthas, French toiles, Italian embroideries, Turkoman coats and Kente cloths from Ghana.

Open daily until 1 November, 11am – 4pm, (last entry 3.30pm). Standard admission prices apply; no booking required. Free for National Trust members.

During our annual clean of the Great Hall, one of our Collections Assistants noticed some writing on one of the portraits.

Not visible without a raking light, the name ‘John Long’ is lightly written across the leg. This name is rather intriguing as the portrait is of Sir William Harbord, brother-in-law of Sir John Hobart, 1st Earl of Buckinghamshire.

Who could John Long be and why is his name written here?
