Happy 40 Years to our friends at Ayr Housing Aid Centre SCIO 🥳

🎉 40 years ago on this very day 28.5.1986 - Ayr Housing Aid Centre became a registered charity

In the mid 80’s a group of local people were discussing homelessness and housing issues in the then Kyle and Carrick area and what could be done. Frustrated at the lack of affordable accommodation and poor conditions vulnerable people were living in with no-where to turn to for help. At this point in the 80s it was common for people to be living in bedsits with poor conditions and disrepair with ejections taking place with little or no notice. This conversation prompted these pioneers to do something about it - they took direct action.

Inspired by a Shelter Scotland conference in Ayr Town Hall this group of interested people came together to form the Independent Housing Aid Centre - AHAC. The group concluded that if a person is threatened with homelessness could access free, independent advice and support, then that homelessness could be prevented and work could be done to link them in with more suitable accommodation and ensure they were claiming their entitlements and enforce their rights. By providing access to social justice, information, advice and support people would not only have the crisis averted but would be able to move forward with their lives, back into work and thrive once more.

Today we give special thanks to those early founding Volunteers - Ian Hughes, Brenda Campbell, Olga Clayton, Alice O’Flynn, Bill Longdon and Raymond Brennan

Special thanks to local organisations who supported us – Kyle & Carrick District Council, Strathclyde Regional Council, South Ayrshire Women's Aid, Shelter Scotland, The Salvation Army, Barnardo’s and local Churches Groups.

AHAC celebrate our 40th Birthday today and will be sharing some stories, pictures and information about the last 4 decades over the coming year. Watch this space for more info….
