Among the treasures in the Chatsworth archive is a mourning book created by Lady Caroline Lamb following the death of her aunt, Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire. Caroline gathered memories, poems and reflections in the book, offering a glimpse into Georgiana’s life. Discover Caroline’s mourning book, alongside more literary highlights from the archive, in our current exhibition, ‘House of Stories: Tales from the Chatsworth Library’, on display until 4 October.

As the weather remains dry, the risk of wildfires across the Chatsworth Estate and the Peak District National Park is extremely high.

A single spark or smoulder can have devastating consequences for wildlife, habitats, livestock, and the people who live and work here.

If you're visiting Chatsworth or exploring the surrounding countryside, please help us to protect our extraordinary landscape by:

- Not lighting campfires or disposable BBQs
- Disposing of ci******es safely - never drop them on the ground
- Taking all litter home with you, especially glass bottles, which can increase fire risk

We’re proud to announce that a new documentary about Chatsworth will air on public television stations in the US in August. Produced by the Institute of Classical Art and Architecture, ‘Chatsworth Through Time’ explores the history, architecture, landscape and artworks of Chatsworth. The programme begins in the Tudor Period and follows our story through five hundred years of history, all the way to the 21st century.

What first appears to be scorched grass is actually a glimpse into Chatsworth’s past. Recent high temperatures and prolonged dry weather have revealed the outline of ‘The Great Parterre’ beneath the South Lawn, an ornate 17th-century garden created for the 1st Duke of Devonshire around 1699 to complement the newly completed South Front of the house. The intricate flower beds and pathways disappeared beneath a new landscape in the 1730s, but in hot, dry conditions the contrast between the shallower-rooted turf and the original garden layout causes its spectacular swirling patterns to re-emerge.

Between March and May 2026, Chatsworth experienced 530 hours of sunshine, around 33% more sunshine than the regional average, while receiving 32% less rainfall than normal. Temperatures have exceeded 30°C in May, June and July, and the exceptionally dry start to July has left the South Lawn parched enough for history to reveal itself once again.

We're pleased to share that in March we undertook filming for a new Channel 4/More4 series, 'Kevin McCloud’s Listed Britain', focusing on Grade I listed sites across the UK. Chatsworth featured alongside well-known locations including the Palace of Westminster and the Crystal Palace Dinosaurs and appeared in episode two, which aired on More4 on 20 May.

The episode is available to watch via the 4OD service. It was a great opportunity to share stories of Chatsworth’s heritage and highlight the work of Chatsworth House Trust, alongside some truly remarkable structures.

We’re pleased to announce the return of The Queen's Reading Room Festival to Chatsworth for the second year on 19-20 September 2026.

Join us for a celebration of books featuring lively conversations, up-close moments with authors and the chance to hear directly from some of today’s most compelling literary voices. This year's line-up of speakers includes Clare Balding, Harlan Coben, Lee Child, Louise Penny, Ann Cleeves, Cecelia Ahern, Meg Mason, Elif Shafak and many more. Festival tickets include entry to the house and garden, and our exhibition, House of Stories: Tales from the Chatsworth Library, which explores Chatsworth’s literary heritage and inspiration in celebration of the National Year of Reading.
