Just look at those stripey antennae! This handsome chap is a Golden-bloomed Longhorn Beetle, spotted in Haddon Medieval Park last week by one of our dedicated insect surveyors.

These beetles grow tucked inside the stems of plants such as cow parsley and hogweed, and their lifecycle is incredibly sensitive to land management and gardening habits. The larvae pupate at the base of the plant stem, so clearing dead flower stalks in the autumn can destroy the next generation. If you want to support these fascinating little creatures in your area, consider leaving some dead stems standing over the winter months.

This July we are delighted to welcome Debbie Bamford to Haddon Hall to lead a very special heritage dyeing workshop. Debbie, known professionally as The Mulberry Dyer, has more than 30 years of experience in historic dyeing techniques. She has conducted meticulous research into the dyes and dyeing methods used throughout the centuries, is a consultant to industry on the use of natural dyes, and her work can be found in the V&A Museum, Hampton Court Palace and the Globe Theatre, as well as historic houses throughout the UK and Europe.

At Haddon she is leading a β€˜Back to the Future’ workshop in our Tudor Stables Studio. In the morning Debbie will teach you how to use madder and weld immersion dyes as they would have been used in the medieval period, and in the afternoon you will dye an item to take home using modern extracts of those same dyes. No previous experience is required, and all tuition, materials and equipment will be provided.

We expect this event to be very popular and places are already selling fast, so please don't delay if you would like to join us!

The dovecote in Haddon Medieval Park is an intriguing building with a wonderful history. Sitting prominently on a limestone outcrop above the Derbyshire River Wye, it was so much more than an ornamental structure. Built in 1614 to house Haddon Hall's 'doves' (most likely native wild pigeons), the birds were kept for their meat, feathers and poo, which was used as a fertiliser and also to make gunpowder. The dovecote is still entirely intact and remains in its original state, featuring the nesting holes for hundreds of birds and the rotating ladder that would have been used to collect the eggs.

Viewed from afar, it's easy to appreciate how perfectly Haddon Hall sits within its landscape. Half-hidden within the surrounding hills, its castellated walls and soaring towers rise up alongside the trees that have grown around it over the centuries.

More than 900 years old, Haddon Hall is one of the country's most elegant, historically important and timeless stately homes. It has remained in the same family for its entire existence and is still a privately-owned home, open to the public 7 days a week.

You can find out more and book tickets to visit the hall or to attend one of our events via the link in our bio.

When you first walk through the ancient oak gates towards Haddon Hall, you'll notice that we do things a little differently here. Instead of manicured lawns sprayed with pesticides, you'll find wildflower meadows full of birdsong, managed organically, hand in hand with nature. The slopes that lead up to the hall are now covered in meadow saxifrage, forget-me-nots and cow parsley, home to all manner of insects, birds and small mammals. Once inside, enjoy our breathtaking formal Elizabethan gardens that cascade down to the Derbyshire River Wye, from which you have wonderful views over the Peak District countryside.
