๐ค๐ Memory Lane Monday โ Banbury Canal ๐๐ค
This week, weโre taking a trip down memory lane along the Oxford Canal in Banbury โ a fascinating part of our townโs history! ๐ฟ
๐
30th March 1778 marked an important day for Banbury, as the Oxford Canal officially reached the town. The arrival was celebrated locally, with the first shipment of coal arriving by canal. ๐ถโ๏ธ
For the next eight years, Banbury became the southern terminus of the canal. Goods travelling further towards Oxford had to be transferred from the boats onto road transport. ๐
The canal eventually continued towards Oxford, with the route completed around 1790.
๐ ๏ธ Banburyโs famous Tooleyโs Boatyard
The arrival of the canal also helped establish Tooleyโs Boatyard, which became an important place for building and repairing traditional wooden narrowboats.
In the 1940s, writer Tom Rolt based himself at Tooleyโs while refitting his narrowboat Cressy. His experiences later helped inspire the preservation movement for Britainโs canals. ๐๐ค
Today, Tooleyโs remains an important piece of Banburyโs canal heritage.
