The Sixteenth Hadrian's Wall Archaeology Forum takes place at the Queen's Hall Arts Centre in Hexham on 17 October.

The one-day event is for everyone - whether you're a professional archaeologist, a local resident or simply curious about what's been found in the ground near you.

The programme for this event will include updates on the excavations at Vindolanda, Milecastle 46 near Carvoran, the Carlisle cricket club site and High Rochester, along with talks describing the results of new investigations at Drumburgh and Whitley Castle.

Just a heads-up that the Roman festival of Consualia is coming up and you may want to prep by making some flower garlands for your mule.

The festival honoured Consus, the ancient Roman god of the subterranean granary and grain storage (who knew?)

In celebration, the underground altar of Consus in the Circus Maximus was uncovered for the day, and sacrifices were made.

The festival featured foot races and chariot races. Working horses, donkeys, and mules were given a day of rest and decorated with elaborate flower garlands.

With space to run and play, it's a great spot to immerse yourself in history. Bring a picnic and venture alongside Hadrian's Wall to Milecastle 37 which offers views that soldiers 1900 years ago would recognise.

What does a National Trust ranger in Hadrian's Wall country do? The answer is, just about everything!

From repairing footpaths alongside a Scheduled Ancient Monument (sometimes with help from a helicopter), to building stairs in the largest area of ancient semi-natural woodland in Northumberland. From, managing volunteers to weeding, planting and repairing and of course not to mention the work involved around Sycamore Gap, our rangers do it all.

And, it's fair to say, that they do it in all weathers. ☀ ☔🌨

THANK YOU to our ranger team for your hard work, dedication and for being all-round good eggs. We'll buy the good biscuits this week.

Did you know that Housesteads provide a home for some fascinating wildlife?

This video captures a Natterer's bat, one of the UK's most agile and skilled hunters, as it flits through the darkness around the fort.

Natterer's bats use echolocation to navigate and can even pluck insects directly from leaves and surfaces. Watching them at work is a reminder that Hadrian's Wall isn't just rich in history - it's also an important haven for nature.

Next time you visit Housesteads, remember that when the day visitors head home, a whole new world wakes up after dark.

Things to look our for at Hadrian's Wall in summer: the Orange Tip butterfly.

The butterfly in this photo is a female as males have bright orange tips on their wings. Spot them from early spring through to summer at Hadrian's Wall and in meadows, woodland and hedges.

We need your help please. There have been countryside fires at Hadrian's Wall and in the Tyne Valley recently - caused by outdoor cooking equipment. The Fire Service were called and thankfully nobody was hurt but countryside fires pose a serious risk to people, wildlife, and the internationally significant archaeology and landscape.

We're asking that you please:

• Don't bring disposable or portable BBQs, fire pits, or stoves to Hadrian’s Wall or surrounding countryside.
• Never light campfires or burn any materials, including charcoal, kindling or candles.
• Take litter home - glass and metal can magnify heat and start fires.
• Take care to fully extinguish ci******es and dispose of them in bins.
• Stick to waymarked paths and keep dogs on leads to avoid disturbing wildlife in stressed habitats.
• If you spot a fire, move away to a safe location, note your position if possible and call 999.

With your help we can protect these special places for future generations.
