Neonatal Word of the Week: Developmental Care

You may hear us talking about developmental care on the neonatal unit. But what does it mean?

Developmental care is about adapting how we care for your baby to support their comfort, sleep, development and individual needs.

For a baby born prematurely, life on a neonatal unit can be very different from the environment they would have experienced inside the womb. There can be lights, sounds, procedures and lots of activity around them.

Developmental care aims to make their environment and care as supportive as possible.

💜Protecting sleep
Giving your baby periods of uninterrupted rest where possible.

💜Reducing noise and bright light
Helping to create a calmer environment.

💜Positive touch
Using gentle, still touch to comfort your baby.

💜Positioning
Supporting your baby in a comfortable, contained position which helps them feel secure.

💜Skin to skin care
When appropriate, cuddling your baby against your chest can provide warmth, comfort and closeness.

💜Watching feeding cues
Looking for signs that your baby is ready to interact or feed.

💜Reading your baby’s cues
Babies can show us when they are comfortable, tired, stressed or need a break.

💜 Parents are a really important part of developmental care!

Your baby knows your voice, smell and touch. Talking, reading or singing to them, providing positive touch, having skin to skin cuddles and getting involved with their cares are all ways you can support them.

At Barnsley Neonatal Unit, we want parents to feel involved in their baby’s care. Ask our team about your baby’s cues and the different ways you can support their development during their neonatal stay. 💜

Congratulations to Nat Broadhead and Jade Baldwin! 👏

Nat and Jade have become the first Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (ANNPs) at Barnsley Hospital, marking an important milestone for the Trust’s Neonatal Unit.

Throughout their training, they balanced advanced academic study with busy clinical responsibilities, demonstrating incredible dedication, resilience and commitment.

Supported by consultant supervisors throughout the programme, Nat and Jade are already making a valuable contribution to patient care, safety and the experience of babies and their families.

A huge congratulations to Nat and Jade on this fantastic achievement and on becoming the Trust’s first ANNPs! 💜💜💜

Neonatal Word of the Week: Colostrum 💛

You may hear us talking about colostrum soon after your baby is born. But what is it, and why is it so important?

Colostrum is the first milk your breasts produce. It is usually thick and can be golden or yellow in colour. It is produced in small amounts, which is normal as your baby has a very small tummy.

Colostrum is rich in nutrients and antibodies which help support your baby’s developing immune system. For babies who are premature or unwell, these small amounts of milk can be particularly valuable.

If your baby isn’t ready to breastfeed or take milk straight away, we may encourage you to hand express your colostrum. It can then be collected in small syringes and given to your baby when appropriate.

You may only see a few drops when you first express. This doesn’t mean you aren’t producing enough. Those tiny drops are still valuable. ✨

Expressing regularly in the early days can also help stimulate and establish your milk supply.

At Barnsley Neonatal Unit, our team can support you with expressing and answer any questions you have about providing breast milk for your baby. Please ask us for help whenever you need it. 💜

Neonatal Unit Word of the Week: Incubator

You may see your baby being cared for in an incubator while they are on the neonatal unit – but what is it and why is it needed?

An incubator is a special enclosed cot that provides a warm and protected environment for your baby.

Babies who are born prematurely or are very small can find it harder to maintain their own body temperature. An incubator helps keep them at the right temperature while they grow and develop. 💜

Even while your baby is in an incubator, there are lots of ways you can be involved in their care. Depending on your baby’s individual needs, this might include:

💜 Gentle touch and comfort
💜Talking, singing or reading to your baby
💜Helping with nappy changes and other cares
💜Having skin-to-skin cuddles when your baby is ready

As your baby grows and becomes better at maintaining their own temperature, they may be ready to move from their incubator into a cot… another special milestone to celebrate!
