👮‍♂️ Hiding in Plain Sight: Two Arrested by Barnsley Central NPT 🛒

Yesterday (Saturday 13th June), officers from your Barnsley Central Neighbourhood Policing Team were out and about in the town centre. This time, we swapped our high-vis jackets for plain clothes to blend in with the weekend shoppers.
Our "hiding in plain sight" approach paid off, resulting in the arrest of two wanted individuals:

A 31-year-old female was spotted and arrested. She was wanted for four separate shop theft offences and for failing to attend court on two occasions.

A 37-year-old female was also intercepted and arrested for shop theft, as well as failing to attend court on two occasions.

🏛️ The Update:
There was no passing go or collecting £200 for this duo. Both women have now been charged and remanded in police custody, and they will be waking up to face the courts instead of the weekend sales.
Shoplifting isn't a victimless crime—it affects our local businesses, staff, and shoppers alike. We will continue to use both visible and plain-clothes operations to keep Barnsley town centre a safe and welcoming place to visit.

Spotted something suspicious while out shopping?
You can report crime to us by calling 101, via our online portal, or 100% anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. In an emergency, always dial 999.

Earlier in the week Barnsley Central Neighbourhood Policing Team visited Queens Road Academy as part of our engagement in education work in Barnsley.

The early years children had a fantastic morning meeting local police officers and getting a close look at a police van. The children were excited to climb inside, sit in the front seats and see some of the equipment used by officers.
Visits like these help young children become familiar with the police in a positive and friendly environment, building confidence and understanding that officers are there to help keep people safe.

Thank you to the staff and pupils at Queens Road Academy for making us feel so welcome.

🛑 Education & Engagement: Keeping Our Streets Safe

Yesterday, our Neighbourhood Policing Team visited Barnsley College to chat with students about a vital topic: the real-world consequences of carrying offensive weapons.
The sessions were part of our ongoing proactive engagement work to keep our young people safe and informed.

What did the day look like?
• The Knife Arch & Engagement Stand: Students got a first-hand look at some of the tools we use to keep public spaces safe and had the chance to chat directly with our officers.

• Interactive Presentation: We delivered a short talk breaking down the legal definitions of offensive weapons—discussing whether items are made, adapted, or intended to cause harm.

• Q&A Session: The students asked some brilliant, thought-provoking questions, showing a real maturity and desire to understand the law.

This exercise was all about positive engagement, breaking down barriers, and ensuring our community's young people have the facts they need to make safe choices.

Thank you to the staff and students at Barnsley College for welcoming us and engaging so positively! 🙌

A Barnsley thief has been put behind bars following a string of offences.

Between April and May, Paul Wake stole items from multiple shops around the town, worth over £140. Items included alcohol, food and laundry products.

All incidents were captured on CCTV, and through work completed by our District Support Hub, Wake was identified as the suspect in all cases. It was also identified that Wake was in breach of his Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO)

The 48-year-old was promptly arrested and charged with five counts of shoplifting and three counts of breaching a CBO.

Wake, of Rufford Avenue, plead guilty to all offences at Barnsley Magistrates' Court yesterday (12 May) and was handed a 12-month sentence.

Our work continues around shoplifting and those who choose to breech their CBOs. If we see offences happening, report it to us so we can investigate accordingly.

No where to ride,” they say… 🤔

Officers were pleased to engage with members of Barnsley Trials Club during a recent event in the area. 🏍️

The Barnsley Trials Club was formed in January 2005 and has since grown to over 250 members. The club’s establishment was a response to concerns over illegal biking, aiming to provide a safe and legal environment for rides.

The club holds around 20 trials a year at various venues, catering to all levels of ability and age.

The gathering was well organised, with participants demonstrating a strong commitment to safety, responsibility, and respect for both the local environment and community. Events like these highlight the positive impact that organised motorsport can have when conducted within agreed guidelines.

We’d like to thank organisers and riders for their cooperation and for promoting safe and lawful use of off-road motorcycles.

If you want any further information on how to get involved please have a look online.
