Barnsley artist Patrick Murphy recommends E. E. Cummings: Selected Poems 1923–1958:
"I’ve been writing more poetry recently and really enjoy the way Cummings uses language not only emotionally, but visually. His poems feel carefully constructed on the page almost like drawings or compositions, where spacing, rhythm and typography become part of the meaning itself. There is also something playful and deeply human in his writing.
"Libraries have always been really important to me. My dad encouraged my love of going to the library when I was young and it’s something I’ve carried with me throughout my life. That’s one of the wonderful things about public libraries: access to such a wide range of ideas, knowledge and inspiration, all freely available to everyone. Wonderful!"

Join us for this FREE author event with Michelle Rawlins at Worsbrough Library!

When war broke out, the young women of Sheffield had their carefree lives turned upside down. With their sweethearts being sent away to fight, they had no choice but to step into the men’s shoes and became the backbone of the city’s steel industry.

Join us to hear from the author of The Steel Girls about these incredible women who rallied to win the war for Britain.

Michelle Rawlins is an author, journalist and university teacher. She has spent the last eight years researching and writing about the women who worked in the steel industry during World War Two. Women of Steel was published in 2020, followed by the six-part fictional series, the Steel Girls.

Yvonne Battle-Felton's critically acclaimed novels are about small towns with dark secrets. You can hear her discuss her work at Library @ the Lightbox on Saturday 4 July at 1.30pm.
Sheffield-based Yvonne is an award-winning author, academic, editor, podcaster, host, creative producer and writer. Her debut novel, Remembered, was longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction and the Not the Booker, and shortlisted for the Jhalak Prize for black British writing.
Her second novel, the eerie Curdle Creek, won the prestigious Shirley Jackson Award for literary horror. It is an American Gothic in the tradition of Shirley Jackson and quite unlike anything else you will have read! If you like Ring Shout or Lovecraft Country, you will love this.
Yvonne is the Academic Director of Creative Writing at Cambridge University. She has also written six titles for Penguin Random House’s Ladybird Series.
