With more hot temperatures forecast this afternoon, we want to make sure everyone can enjoy the sunshine safely.

While many of us look forward to the hot weather, warm spells can pose health risks to some people.

There are lots of simple things we can all do to beat the heat, including:
☀️ Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water
☀️ Applying sunscreen regularly and closing our curtains during the day to keep our homes cool
☀️ Checking on people who may need a little extra help to stay safe in the heat

Let’s work together to help everyone stay cool and enjoy the sunshine safely. You can find more information and advice on the NHS website: https://bit.ly/45C273w

Following the tragic water-related deaths of 10 people around the country and with more hot weather over the coming days, we want to remind you that Barnsley has no areas which are designated for open-water swimming.

While the current temperatures might make taking a quick dip to cool off seem inviting, open water can be dangerous. There may be hidden dangers under the surface and a rapid change of temperature can shock your body and have serious consequences.

Please stay safe and be water wise this summer. You can find more advice on water safety and drowning prevention by watching the video below or by going to the South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue website; it could save a life: syfire.gov.uk/safety-advice/water-safety-and-drowning-prevention

Barnsley’s Health on the High Street development has been visited by the new Leader of Barnsley Council, who met staff and patients who can now access many appointments in the town centre instead of the hospital.
Barnsley Hospital has already transferred several of its services to the Alhambra Outpatients unit, where the former Wilko store used to be. These include Ophthalmology, Optometry, Retinal Screening, Rheumatology, Dermatology and Orthotics.
Councillor William Brown, Leader of Barnsley Council, said: "It was great to visit the Health on the High Street project and get to see firsthand how it is making it easier for Barnsley people to get the right support they need, right in the heart of their town centre.
“We’ll be working with officers to look at plans for the next stages of this project in the coming weeks.

🌙 Eid al-Adha Mubarak to everyone celebrating in Barnsley today.
We’re sending our warmest wishes to all those marking Eid al-Adha.

Eid al-Adha is one of the most important celebrations in the Islamic calendar. It commemorates the story of Prophet Ibrahim’s devotion and willingness to put his faith first.

For many, the day is marked by prayer, spending time with family and friends, sharing meals, and giving to those in need, reflecting values of kindness, generosity, and community.

Eid Mubarak to all who are celebrating today.

As his year in office comes to a close, Barnsley’s outgoing Mayor, David Leech, has reflected on a memorable 12 months supporting local causes and communities. Raising an incredible £36,106.50 for two local charities, supporting families affected by su***de and veterans facing homelessness.

Alongside Mayoress Alison Leech, he’s attended events across the borough, from school visits to community celebrations, with a real focus on inspiring young people to learn more about Barnsley’s history and democracy.

Mayor David Leech said:
“It has been a real privilege to serve as Mayor and to meet so many people across our borough… I’ve been truly inspired by the kindness, dedication and community spirit I’ve seen throughout the year.”

The next Mayor of Barnsley will be announced at Annual Full Council on Friday 29 May.
