The deadline to apply for your child’s secondary school place for September 2027 is fast approaching.

If your child was born between 1 September 2015 and 31 August 2016, you have until 31 October 2026 to apply for their secondary school place for September 2027.

Applying online is quick and easy – all you need is an email address. See our secondary school guide and apply at barnsley.gov.uk/schooladmissions.

Congratulations to more than 50 long-serving Barnsley Council colleagues who were recognised this week for clocking up an incredible 1,375 years of service between them.

This year's Long Service Awards celebration was held on Monday at Barnsley Civic.

An amazing 46 colleagues were recognised for 25 years of service, and five for reaching an extraordinary 40 years of service.

Colleagues were treated to afternoon tea, and thanked personally by the Leader of Barnsley Council, Councillor William Brown, the Chief Executive of Barnsley Council, Sarah Norman, and the Mayor of Barnsley, Cllr Liam Hardcastle.

Good morning, Barnsley! 👋

Our town centre wardens recently spotted a man they believed was wanted by police and quickly contacted officers.

While keeping him under observation, their local knowledge also helped identify a second man suspected of an offence at a nearby store earlier that day.

The swift response and close working between our wardens and police resulted in two arrests.

A great example of how strong partnership working and local knowledge are helping to keep Barnsley town centre safe.

Join us at the War Memorial outside Barnsley Town Hall on Sunday 8 November 2026 for this year's Remembrance Service to honour those who have fought for our country.

Starting at 11am, the event will include a parade, wreath laying and moments of reflection as we honour those who served and sacrificed. Everyone is welcome to attend.

If you wish to lay a wreath during the service, please register with the Mayor’s Office in advance by emailing [email protected], calling 01226 773804 or enquiring at Town Hall reception.

The registration deadline is Wednesday 4 November 2026. Those not registered will still have the opportunity to lay wreaths at the end of the service.

With Smithies Recycling Centre still closed and winter opening hours underway across the other recycling sites, we're expecting them to continue being busier than usual.

Until Smithies reopens, Worsbrough Recycling Centre will stay open until 5pm each day. This will return to its usual 4pm winter closing time when Smithies reopens.

Please help us reduce waiting times across all our sites:
👉Visit before 11am or after 3pm, when sites are usually quieter.
👉Avoid peak times and weekends.
👉Sort your waste before you go.
👉If you don’t need to dispose of your waste urgently, consider storing it safely until Smithies reopens.
