Cattermole was a prolific watercolour artist who also provided book illustrations for the works of Charles Dickens and Walter Scott.

Back in 2021 Barnsley Museums & Heritage Trust secured funding from South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority as part of the Additional Restrictions Grant that had resulted from the pandemic.

The Trust used some of the funding to commission a portrait of Paul Elmhirst, who has been chair of the Cooper Trustees for many years, which you can now see on display in The Cooper Gallery.

The artist commissioned to paint the portrait was Richard Kitson Fine Art a figurative and portrait artist based in Barnsley. His work has been featured in prestigious exhibitions at the National Portrait Gallery and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. Richard has exhibited across the UK and internationally and was a participant in Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year 2018.

Designed for the centrepiece of the Medieval Court at the Great Exhibition, 1851. The stove was constructed of majolica-glazed tiles set on an iron frame made by Hardman & Co. of Birmingham.

This Cannon Hall Museum, Park and Gardens tile has been conserved through the support of Barnsley Museums & Heritage Trust
