Greuze was born at Tournus, a market town in Burgundy. He is generally said to have formed his own talent; at an early age his inclinations, though thwarted by his father, were encouraged by a Lyonnese artist named Grandon who had a considerable reputation as a portrait-painter.

Downstairs is Studio Prints which features work by Lucian Freud, Frank Auerbach, Stephen Conroy and Celia Paul.

Upstairs in the Sadler Room is 'Post' by Benny Watson: exploring themes of identity, loss and renewal. Created in the year following the death of his grandmother, Mel D**e MBE, Watson uses old postcards and materials found in Mel's home to create bold new works.

We are open Mon-Sat 10am-4pm. Admission is free and donations to Barnsley Museums & Heritage Trust are always appreciated
