Lots of ambition in the new Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy CWIS3. The way Active Travel England allocate funding for Active Travel infrastructure is changing, with apparent emphasis on Mayoral Strategic Authorities. Let’s hope Northern Devon sees improvement in actual investment in implementing the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) and routes / areas outside the Barnstaple, Bideford and Northam BBN LCWIP such as Braunton to Ilfracombe (some work ongoing as part of the Devon Countywide LCWIP), Braunton to Saunton, Bishops Tawton to Barnstaple, and connecting the Tarka Trail to Torrington town centre and Rosemoor, to name but a few.

This is a survey about the Saunton to Braunton route by a local councillor, who is seeking your input on walking and cycling safety, speed limits and options to pursue, given the right support.

Interesting debate, some of our local painted-on cycle lanes are too narrow to be safely utilised, due to gully drains and potholes around ironworks. Why not paint full width cycle lanes on roads that can’t yet accommodate a physically segregated cycle path? This approach is used on single carriageway rural roads on popular cycle routes in Switzerland, acting as a reminder to share the available space safely. Saunton Road comes to mind and seems to be trending on Facebook.

Like swimming with sharks!

We like this visual explanation of unprotected bike lanes. This is why we oppose painted only lanes on high traffic strategic cycle routes.
