Piel Castle

Once the last bastion of defence from the marauding Scots, Piel Castle is now in ruins, with only the King of the island and inquisitive visitors for company. Built around 1327 it was mainly used as a fortified warehouse for the storage of grain and wool. In 1487 it was invaded by Lambert Simnel and over 2,000 of his followers on the start of their abortive attempt to seize the crown from Henry VII. The only means of access is via the Roa Island ferry service or by taking a guided walk across the sands at low tide. The Ship Inn is open during the tourist season refreshments are available on the island during the summer months and also basic camping facilities. Piel Island was featured on the ITV Programme Islands of Britain presented by Martin Clunes. The programme filmed the coronation of Steve Chattaway as King of Piel Island a few years ago now! Enjoy a walk around the Island or take in the sites of Morcambe Bay looking out on a clear day over to Fleetwood, Blackpool, Shores of Cumbria and Lancashire. Also fantastic view of the Nature Reserve on the tip of Walney. Perfect day out for all the family,

🚨 Summer 2026 Season 🚨

It’s been a Long Winter!!! We thought it best to let you know what we’ve been up to over the months since we ended our season last October😊

So down to the business end.. we can announce our season will begin on Sat 21st March at 10.30am… we will endeavour to sail every day the weather allows, this is in conjunction with The Ship Inn, Piel Island who serve food and drinks daily!
Our Seal Watching Trips will commence the following week ( keep an eye out for the dates )

One of our older boats known as “John” has had a major facelift! See photos below… before and after 🙂well done to the Boys for putting in the hard work over the winter months dodging the wind and rain at Roa Island, think you will agree the change and attention to detail is amazing!
The boats been re-fiberglassed, re-seated and new storage compartments!

See you all soon!!
