It's been a week since Barry's first ever Street Art Festival was held in Central Park, and what a day it was 🫟

Organised by local artists Hurts So Good, the free two-day festival brought together some of the UK's street artists for a vibrant programme of live artwork, graffiti battles, music, fashion and independent traders 🎶

The festival was a project delivered and funded by the Barry Neighbourhoods Board through the UK Government’s Pride in Place Fund 🤸

It’s been fantastic to see all the artwork from the event and hear how all those who attended had a great time🙌

We’re delighted to say it was a success and brought colour, creativity and culture to Barry 🎨

⚠ Residents are being warned following an increase in reports of two males going door-to-door offering to clean gutters, in the Barry area.

They are reportedly stating they are “doing everyone’s gutters in the street” and charging £65. In some cases, no work has been carried out despite payment being taken. There are also reports of the males requesting residents’ bank cards.

🛑 Prevention advice:
· Don’t feel pressured into agreeing to work or making an immediate payment.
· Use a trusted trader and get quotes before agreeing to any work.
· Don’t allow unexpected callers into your home.
· Never hand over your bank card, PIN or banking details to unexpected callers.
· If possible, note descriptions, vehicles and registration numbers and retain any CCTV footage.

If you have concerns about a caller, keep them out and contact a trusted person for advice.

If you believe you have been a victim of rogue trading, report it to Trading Standards and/or the police. In an emergency or if you feel threatened, call 999.

We are delighted to invite you to this year’s Merchant Navy Day Service at the Civic Offices in Barry 🚢

The event will be held on the 3 September at the Civic Office Fourecourt at 11:00, but guests are kindly requested to arrive by 10:45 to allow time for preparations before the service begins ⏱️

The occasion is an important opportunity to recognise and honour the service and dedication of the Merchant Navy and wider Armed Forces in our community. The mayor and other important figures from the community will be present, highlighting the contribution of local people towards the cause.

The Merchant Navy flag will also be raised to honour the occasion 🏳️

Your presence would be greatly appreciated as we come together to pay tribute to those who have served our nation 🏅

You may notice the pavement in front of the former Wilko building on Holton Road has been blocked off 🛑

As part of our ongoing programme of improvements to the building, routine safety checks identified some external masonry that needs repair. Expect scaffolding to be erected soon 🏗️

The scaffolding is being put in place as a precaution so this work can be carried out safely 👷‍♀️

The craft fayre and events planned at the building this week will still go ahead 🎨

Cadoxton House is complete! 🏠

A former office building in Barry has been transformed into 12 modern, energy-efficient one-bedroom apartments, providing much-needed short-term accommodation for local Vale residents who are at risk of homelessness.

Cadoxton House will provide a safe, secure and supportive place for people to stay while they take the next steps towards permanent accommodation and a more stable future 👣

By bringing a vacant building back into use, we’re helping to meet the Vale’s housing needs while making a real difference to people’s lives and giving them the opportunity to begin their next chapter.

It’s a great example of how making better use of existing buildings can support both people and the wider regeneration of our communities 🤝

Penarth Pier Pavilion Cinema has entered the British Independent Film Awards for Cinema of the Year 🏆

This is fantastic news for the Vale, as they are our only full-time cinema 🎉

The cinema shows a wide range of films, spanning from Welsh-language films to the latest Hollywood blockbusters 🎞️

The new school year is fast approaching! 📚

From September, pupils in Years 7 and 8 living in households receiving Universal Credit will be able to apply for the Welsh Government’s expanded Free School Meals scheme, following the removal of the income threshold 🍴

This is the first phase of a wider rollout to other secondary school year groups 🏫

Remember, the eligibility criteria for Free School Meals and the School Essentials Grant are different. Our Annual Canvass is underway! 🗳️

Every year, we contact households across the Vale to check the electoral register is up to date and make sure everyone who is eligible to vote can have their say.

Canvass letters will start landing at doors from next week 📬

You’ll receive either:

🟩 Green letter: Check the details are correct. If anything needs changing, follow the instructions to update your information as soon as possible.

🟥 Pink letter: Your details may not be up to date if you don’t respond. You must follow the instructions to confirm who should be registered at your address by Friday 18 September - the easiest way to respond is online.

You may also receive an email reminder if we have your email address 📧

This year, we will contact any non-responders by telephone instead of door knocking, so it’s important to respond to your letter as soon as possible.

Please don’t ignore your letter. Not being on the register can affect your credit score and could prevent you from voting in the 2027 Local Elections.

Congratulations to all the young people across the Vale receiving their GCSE results today! 👏🎉

Today marks the culmination of years of hard work, determination and resilience, and there is plenty to celebrate in the Vale with:

📚 27.4% of entries achieving an A or A*
📚 70.7% gaining A*–C
📚 97.2% achieving A*–G

We’re incredibly proud of learners across the Vale and hope everyone takes a moment to celebrate their achievements and look forward to what comes next.

A huge thank you too to our young people services, teachers, support staff and families who have supported our young people along the way 👩‍🏫🙌

Whether you’re heading on to further education, starting an apprenticeship or training, or taking your first steps into the world of work - congratulations, and best of luck for the future! 🎓✨

Don't forget, The Pod at Golau Caredig in Barry is hosting a free 'Discover Your Next Step' event tomorrow (21 August), 11am - 3pm - if you are thinking about different options, friendly experts will be on hand to offer advice and support.

The new artwork flooring at Murchfield Courts in Dinas Powys is now complete! 🙌

Designed by Aberrant Architecture, the vibrant floor design is the finishing touch to the newly transformed space 🤩

The artwork is part of an exciting wider project which has seen the former courts upgraded with:

🏀 New rotating basketball and netball courts
🪑 Bespoke seating and exercise equipment
🌱 Planting to boost biodiversity
🚶 Improved pathways and access

It’s been brilliant to see people already enjoying the new space, and we hope it continues to be a place for sport, exercise, play and community activities for years to come.

A huge thank you to everyone who shared their ideas and feedback during the consultation - your input helped shape the final design, and we made changes along the way in response to what you told us 💬

The project was made possible through Section 106 developer contributions, including funding for public art and open space improvements, alongside support from Sport Wales and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
