Historic Barton upon Humber

Barton upon Humber is a historic market town in North Lincolnshire on the south bank of the River Humber and is often described as being the jewel in North Lincolnshire’s crown. A Museum Resilience Grant has seen the birth of Past Forward, a project that aims to increase awareness of all the town has to offer, from its many notable buildings, to its three accredited museums as well as developing a brand that is unique to Barton.

It's not all glamorous work here at the archives!

The Barton Volunteers have been getting wet and grubby cleaning these local glass bottles. Using a little warm water, a mild detergent, and just a handful of rice, we're carefully removing years of dirt and grime. With a bit of patience, we're hoping they'll soon be sparkling again and ready to share their stories!

Now well known for its fantastic sandwiches, the shop on the corner of Waterside Road and Dam Road has had several owners over the years.

According to the 1908 trade directory, the shop was run by Mrs Wilmot, who operated it as a general dealer. By the time of the 1940 directory, the business was being run by W. Shaw, and he continued to trade as a general dealer.

This fascinating old photograph of Junction Square shows the Skipworth shop on the right-hand side.

Our archive volunteers have been studying the image and are particularly intrigued by the bicycle being ridden in the centre of the picture. We would love to learn more about it.

Do you recognise the make or model of the bicycle? Perhaps you know roughly when it dates from, or have information about this type of bike?

We find all sorts of fascinating items in the archives, and this one really caught a volunteer’s eye – so we just had to share it.

This ‘Humanised Trufood’ tin was marketed as being ‘nearest to mother’s milk’ and contained powdered milk intended for infants from birth up to 9 months. A striking reminder of how infant feeding has been marketed and understood in the past.
