With the rain finally making an appearance, it’s a great time to think about how we can make the most of every drop on our allotments.

While we’re unable to allow open water sources on our allotments for health & safety reasons, we strongly encourage our allotment holders to collect rainwater using closed-top water butts.

With half term almost upon us, we'd like to ask parents and carers to have a quick conversation with any children and young people who are beginning to enjoy a little more independence around the parish.

Unfortunately, this weekend, the public toilets at Old Basing Recreation Ground were used as a hangout spot by several groups of teenagers and left in an unacceptable condition. Wet toilet roll was thrown into the ceiling, a pumpkin was smashed throughout the facility, and litter including empty cans and bottles was left behind.

Today, our office team rolled up their sleeves and cleaned up the mess themselves. One member of staff even spent part of their birthday doing it, which really shouldn't have been necessary.

Public facilities are there for everyone to use and enjoy. Please help us remind younger residents that they should be treated with respect, just as they would hope others would treat things that belong to them.

As a final reminder, the recreation ground and surrounding area are covered by CCTV, and those involved have been identified.

Let's all do our bit to help keep our community facilities clean, welcoming and available for everyone. 👍

Free home energy surveys to help residents save money:

As the weather begins to turn and temperatures start to dip, a specialist team is offering to visit Basingstoke and Deane residents’ homes for free, to give them advice on how they could save hundreds of pounds on their energy bills every year.

Every household in the borough can book a survey with Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council's money-saving energy experts, no matter whether they rent or own their home or what type of property they live in.

The surveys are completed by trained advisors in the council’s Green Team and are designed to help residents save money while keeping their homes warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

The visit includes the use of thermal imaging to understand where heat is being lost and a check to make sure radiators are working properly.

The advice the team gives is tailored to individuals’ homes and residents will benefit from a written report that sets out practical actions they can take to make their home more energy efficient. This can include simple everyday changes to more significant actions like adding insulation and switching to low carbon heating.
Over 1,150 households across the borough have already benefited from having a survey since the launch of the service three years ago, potentially saving each of them hundreds of pounds every year on their bills.

Residents have praised the surveys, with Diane describing the visit as “very interesting and informative” and saying it “raised our awareness”, while Nicola said it was “exactly the kind of help and information we needed”. Chris added that the survey was “very thorough” and explained ways to improve energy efficiency “in layman's terms.”

The Cabinet member responsible for the energy-saving help Cllr Chris Tomblin said: “If you are worried about rising energy costs and looking for ways to reduce your bills, our specialist team can help.

"This is part of our aim to help improve energy-efficiency in homes across the borough at a time of rising fuel prices and to cut carbon in support of our climate change pledge.

“Whether you rent or own your home, I encourage you to book in for a free survey with our experts. It’s free, only lasts an hour and the tailored advice you would get could help you to save hundreds of pounds every year.”

We're delighted to announce that the Parish Council's new Speed Indicator Device (SID), funded through Section 106 contributions, is now in operation and will rotate between eight locations around the parish.

The device provides a visible reminder to motorists of their speed and helps encourage safer driving habits where residents have highlighted concerns.

Interestingly, the SID has already exhausted its batteries twice during its early deployment because of the sheer volume of traffic passing the location each day. While that means a little extra maintenance for us, it also highlights just how busy our roads are and why initiatives such as this are important.

We'd like to thank everyone who has supported our efforts to improve road safety. Community feedback has helped shape this investment, and we hope the device will make a positive contribution to safer journeys for residents, pedestrians, cyclists and motorists alike.

Have your say on the Old Basing and Lychpit Neighbourhood Plan review.

The submitted updated plan sets out a vision for Old Basing and Lychpit and includes proposed planning policies which once adopted will be used to determine planning applications locally and guide development in the area until 2042.

The plan can be viewed online or at listed locations in the borough and people can give their views online, by email or by post until 5pm on Friday 6 November 2026.

Sometimes, it's the little things in life that bring you joy.... Such as when your parcel is finally delivered and you open the box and inside is some wonderful shiny and glossy Read Easy literature!!

But for many, some of these supposedly little things that we take for granted are anything but. For those who struggle with reading, these 'little things' can become a mountain to climb.

It's lovely to visit and cheer a friend up in hospital, however when every sign is blue with white writing pointing here, there and everywhere, it suddenly becomes an impenetrable labyrinth...

We all receive mail, and have some system for sorting the important from the junk. However for some, hiding all of it in the drawer is the system, which is great for the junk, not so good for the important.

Sometimes it's just nice sitting with a friend for coffee, until 'Oh yeah, did you see Bernard's Facebook status?!' Then, before you know it, you have a phone thrust in your face, do you laugh? Smile? Shrug? A combination of all three?

However, you don't have to climb this mountain alone. At Read Easy, we help adults that want to learn to read so that the 'little things', genuinely become, little things. We offer personalised, one-to-one reading coaching that is free and confidential.

We'll give you the equipment so that once you have climbed the mountain, you can ski merrily down the other side with confidence and ease.
