The borough of Basingstoke and Deane covers an area of over 245 square miles within northern Hampshire with a population of approximately 185,200 people. Our main service responsibilities include rubbish collection, recycling, leisure, parks, environmental health, economic development,

housing and planning. There are 54 councillors elected by local people in 18 wards across the borough. Councillors have responsibility for strategic decisions, budget setting and performance monitoring. Ideally candidates will have previous experience maintaining sports facilities which include football pitches, bowling greens, golf greens and artificial surfaces. A full clean driving license is required for this role, along with the skills and ability to communicate at different levels.

Our project to make over £1 million pounds' worth of improvements to Oakridge West Community Centre is progressing well and is now in its final stages.

Our aim is to modernise the building to create a more modern, sustainable and welcoming centre that can be enjoyed by local people for years to come. The work at the community building in Upton Crescent is being funded by money from development.

The facility is now really beginning to take shape, with bright and welcoming spaces both inside and out. Recent progress includes the completion of the entrance lobby roof, installation of solar panels and the near-completion of the timber cladding on the outside of the building.

Inside the building, work is progressing on the new kitchen, toilets, electrical and mechanical systems with decorating now underway in some areas. Externally, the ground works are also progressing.

We're currently aiming to complete the project and begin handing over the centre to the Oakridge West Community Association between late September and early October, subject to any unforeseen issues.

Although temperatures have dropped slightly, conditions across our parks and open spaces are still very dry.

Our community safety patrol team continues to patrol the borough to help keep our communities, wildlife and green spaces safe. Last week, they found evidence of two fires in public places, one at Pack Lane and another in Russell Howard Park.

Thankfully, these incidents did not result in more serious damage, but this photo of Russell Howard Park shows how easily the fire could have threatened local wildlife and the spaces we all enjoy.

Please leave campfires and disposable barbecues at home when visiting public parks and open spaces.

It's International Dog Day 🐶

Meet Bailey, whose human works here at the council. Bailey enjoys walks in the woods, meeting people and doggy ice cream.

Every year, we help reunite lost dogs with their owners. Last year, we picked up 75 of them in the borough and manged to get 53 back home (don't worry, the other 22 went to local rescue centres to be rehomed). If your dog's microchip details are up to date, it makes it much easier for us to get them safely back to you, where they belong.

Last week our nature engagement ranger, Annie, along with Alan from Natural Basingstoke , lead their ‘Ready Set Ranger’ event at Popley Fields Community Association.

Joined by multiple families and children of all ages, the pair lead on craft activities such as bug house building, creating wildlife art with natural materials and leaf printing.
