Sydney Gardens Project

Sydney Gardens Project Sydney Gardens is a public open green space at the end of Great Pulteney Street in Bath, Somerset, UK, managed by Bath and NE Somerset Council.

Sydney Gardens is one of Britain’s best remaining Georgian Pleasure Gardens. It opened in 1795. It is a short walk from the city centre and located behind the Holburne Museum in Bath. The Great Western Railway and the Kennet and Avon Canal run through the park with wonderful trees, historic buildings and bridges, and lawns for relaxing, picnics or dog walks. Sydney Gardens has been awarded Nationa

l Lottery Heritage Funding to improve the heritage park over three years from 2019 to 2022. The pandemic has impacted our programme and delayed our project by around 9 months. We are still aiming to complete in March 2022. The funding is being used to restore historic buildings, invest in landscaping works, renovate the play area for use by people of all ages and create new gardens, alongside a programme of events and activities. The project will celebrate the fascinating history of the gardens, with its Cosmorama, Labyrinth, Merlins Swing, Concerts, Public Breakfasts, Galas and Illuminations.

Have you noticed our new gravel bed in Sydney Gardens? The gravel mulch helps to suppress weeds and retain water. Our Wednesday morning volunteers have been working very hard to design, prepare and plant this bed with herbaceous perennials many of which are pollinator friendly plants. Here’s a photo of them learning how to plant perennials as part of a volunteer training course with our knowledgeable trainer Robin Montgomery.
