In a picturesque valley of the river Frome, on the border between Wiltshire and Somerset and nine miles from Bath stands the remains of Farleigh Hungerford Castle. This fortified mansion was occupied for 300 years by the Hungerford family and today their intriguing, yet sometimes gruesome stories are told through a free audio tour.

The bells of St Leonards tolling over the castle ๐Ÿ™‚

The church of St Leonard was built as a replacement when the previous church was brought within the walls of the castle by Lord Walter Hungerfordโ€™s extension circa 1430-1445.

Video description: A view of St Leonardโ€™s church just beyond the walls of the castle, with a bright blue sky in the background. The sound of bells can be heard.

from the man himself!

The wonderful wall painting of St. George slaying the dragon in St. Leonard's chapel is one of only four examples of St. George standing (rather than on horseback) ๐Ÿ‰

The painting was probably commissioned by Walter 1st Lord Hungerford in the 1440s, to commemorate his Knighthood of the Garter, the highest military honour in England (St. George is the patron saint of the Order of the Garter).

Sir Walter was awarded this great honour as a token of royal gratitude for the great military successes he achieved during the Hundred Years War against France. Indeed, King Henry V attributed the legendary English victory at the Battle of Agincourt to the saint's intervention ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ

The St. George wall painting at Farleigh Hungerford Castle is one of the best examples in the country, and recent conservation work is helping to reveal more of the painting's secrets, thanks to donations from our members, visitors and supporters.
