What a few weeks it has been. ๐Ÿš’๐Ÿ”ฅ
It's been an exceptionally busy period.
The Cairngorms wildfire has required an enormous response from agencies across Scotland. Over the past few weeks we've had the privilege of working alongside firefighters from stations across the country.

This incident simply couldn't be managed without the support of so many others.
A huge thank you goes to the gamekeepers, forestry teams, estates, local land managers and all of our partner agencies who have worked alongside emergency services. Their local knowledge, specialist equipment and willingness to get stuck in have been invaluable throughout this challenging incident.

We're also incredibly grateful to the many volunteers and local communities who have looked after crews with food, drinks and welfare support. After long hours on the fire ground, your kindness has meant more than you'll ever know.

To the employers of our On Call (Retained Duty System) firefighters โ€“ thank you. Your continued support in allowing staff to leave work at a moment's notice, attend incidents and sometimes arrive late after a night of emergency call-outs is vital. Without employers supporting the Retained Duty System, many of our communities simply wouldn't have the fire cover they rely on.

Finally, to the people who rarely get recognised but make the biggest sacrifices โ€“ our partners, families and friends. Thank you for understanding when the pager sounds during family meals, birthdays, weekends away or at 3am. You lose sleep too, change plans at a moment's notice and help keep everything going at home while we're away helping others. Without your support, many of our firefighters simply couldn't continue to do this role.

๐Ÿš’ Could you be part of the team?
Beauly Community Fire Station is actively recruiting On Call Firefighters, and we need more people to help provide reliable, consistent emergency cover for our local area.
If you live or work close enough to respond to the station when your pager sounds, have commitment, enthusiasm and want to make a real difference in your community, we'd love to hear from you. No previous firefighting experience is required โ€“ full training is provided.
If you've ever thought about becoming an On Call Firefighter, now is the perfect time to get in touch and find out more.

Thank you once again to everyone who has supported us throughout this exceptionally busy period. Here's hoping the weeks ahead are a little quieter... although we won't hold our breath! ๐Ÿš’๐Ÿ‘

REMEMBERING: Today we remember Firefighter Roderick MacLeod, 25, from Inverness Fire Station, who tragically died in the line of duty whilst tackling a blaze on this day in 1981.

At 17:20 hours on the the 21st of May 1981, the then Northern Fire Brigade received a 999 call reporting a fire at Aberchalder Lodge, four miles from Invergarry.

The then volunteer firefighters of Fort Augustus were the first appliance to to mobilised, and on their arrival found a severe fire in progress, with flames coming through the roof of the isolated guest house.

The Officer in Charge immediately sent an assistance message requesting further appliances and firefighters. Two appliances from Inverness and one from Fort William were mobilised on receipt of the assistance message.

On arrival of the additional appliances and crews, a reliable water supply for firefighting was established, and firefighters worked for hours to bring the fire under control and prevent it from spreading.

Firefighter MacLeod was on the ground floor of the property with another firefighter, working to extinguish pockets of fire in the living room, when suddenly and without warning the first floor collapsed down onto them, trapping Firefighter MacLeod.

Immediate attempts were made by firefighter MacLeodโ€™s colleagues to locate him, with firefighters digging with their hands through rubble. He was found trapped under beams, which were too heavy to lift by hand, and hydraulic jacks had to be used.

Despite the best efforts of a local doctor, and firefighter MacLeodโ€™s colleagues to resuscitate him he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Firefighter MacLeod was married and had served with the Northern Fire Brigade for four years.

The most likely cause of the blaze was believed to have been an electrical fault under the flooring of the bedroom which was directly above the living room. Most of the Lodge dating from the 17th Century was destroyed in the fire and subsequent collapse.

Firefighter Roderick MacLeod, gone but never forgotten.

A cracking evening down by the river for the Beauly crew โ€” making the most of the better weather and sharpening up our pump drills ๐Ÿš’โ˜€๏ธ

Using our LPP to feed the main pump, we focused on a key lesson: you canโ€™t put out more water than youโ€™re receiving. We call this overdrawing the supply and youโ€™ll quickly run into dropping pressures, poor flow, and a pump that wonโ€™t thank you for it! We discussed why and more importantly how we rectify it.

Itโ€™s all about teamwork, communication, and getting the balance right โ€” supporting the supply, managing demand, and keeping everything running smoothly when it counts.

If this looks like something youโ€™d enjoy and you can offer daytime cover, weโ€™re currently looking for new on-call firefighters to join the team here in Beauly. Get in touch and start your journey ๐Ÿš’
