We have also reported the large fallen branch from one of the willows on the green between Rooksmead and Brickhill Drive. It is perhaps more accurate to say that the tree has split - it is not clear if this is because of lack of water, or because of high winds.

Technically this area is part of De Parys Ward, with David Sawyer and Henry Vann as the local Borough Councillors, but we hope they won't mind us reporting the issue!

If you come across any similar problems with trees on public land managed by the Bedford Borough Council you can report them via this page: https://www.bedford.gov.uk/leisure-parks-and-sport/parks-and-open-spaces/trees-bedford-borough-0/report-tree-problem

Councillor Gallagher is finally discovering what many of us have been saying for more than two years. The Tory house of cards is crumbling, leaving the council in chaos. The sooner Mayor Tom Wootton resigns, the better for Bedford Borough!

Councillor Sarah Gallagher has resigned from Bedford Borough Council’s executive cabinet, saying she could no longer continue...

Please note the advice from Bedford Borough Council, in Henry Vann's post below.

To protect bin collection teams in the heat, bin collections will be starting early in some parts of Bedford Borough.

The council have shared this information on how you can help by:
🔶 Putting bins out the night before. [This reduces the chance of a bin being missed if crews pass earlier than usual.]
🔶 Tightly tying food waste bags and keeping lids closed securely with the handle up. [This helps keep collections hygienic and reduces the risk of spills.]
🔶 Parking carefully. [Badly parked vehicles can slow or block collections.]
🔶 Supporting our crews.

Time for the Mayor to resign
Following today's news that Councillor Robert Rigby, Portfolio Holder for Adult Services in the Conservative Mayor's Executive, has resigned with immediate effect, Councillor Henry Vann commented:

"The Mayor’s ship is sinking. Councillor Rigby was only reappointed as Adult Services Portfolio Holder last week and he’s already decided to leave the sinking ship. However, Councillor Rigby has played his full part in this chaos, presiding over a Requires Improvement judgement on Adult Services and the effective bankruptcy of the Council. The public will not be fooled by him pretending to be an opponent of the Mayor's disastrous administration now and he is clearly just worried about losing his seat of Bromham to the Liberal Democrats."

Fighting back against bus cuts: Liberal Democrats hand in petition to Bedford Borough Council
Local campaigner Henry Vann has handed in a petition to Bedford Borough Council in response to the recent bus cuts, calling on the council to step up to ensure that our communities continue to be served by a regular, reliable bus service.
More than 570 people have signed the petition and Henry Vann commented, “I am being contacted almost every day by worried residents, frequently older people who cannot drive, who are devastated by these cuts. This is about basic access to shops and doctors as well as work or school. We have been working hard to push the council to work with bus companies to fill the gaps left and to lessen the impact of these cuts. They will isolate so many people, and cause frustration to those who rely on the buses for work, school or appointments.”
Stagecoach’s plans, effective from 31st May, involve routes 7, 10 and 53 being totally discontinued and other routes are being changed and reduced.
The 53 and 53A from Wootton is being cut, only part replaced by the 2W. This will mean that Hillgrounds in Kempston will lose all 8 stops.
The disappearance of the 53 and 53A also mean that the Cranfield UNO bus is now the only bus serving large parts of Wootton.
In Shortstown, cuts to the number 3 service see some schoolchildren in New Cardington having to walk 20 minutes to reach their nearest bus stop to Bedford Academy.
In North Bedford the loss of the 7 and 10 and the rerouted 4 will isolate many residents.

Here is a scam alert tip from the Consumers' Association, Which?

'Bank impersonation scams: how to stay safe

We spoke to someone who, after receiving a genuine call from their bank about a fraudulent payment on their account, was later called by a scammer attempting to con them again by impersonating their bank.

This scam relied on the genuine call to prime the victim to trust the fake one. If you receive a call claiming to be from your bank, the safest thing to do is hang up and dial 159, which will connect you with your bank.'

Follow the link for more details.

Which? explains how to stay safe from bank impersonation scams
