Roll up, roll up! The circus has unexpectedly come to Hill Rise. This play tent was found today in the woods at the nature reserve. If it's yours, it's now been put by the bike stands at the entrance.

There's something undeniably magical about the early spring season at Hill Rise nature reserve, which has quickly become my all-time favorite time of the year. During this brief window of two to three weeks, the entire landscape transforms, bursting forth with new life and growth that never fails to astound me.

As I walk through the reserve right now, the blackthorn trees are a sight to behold, adorned with an abundance of blossoms. Lower down is equally enchanting, with delicate primroses, vibrant violets, and charming cowslips carpeting the ground. But perhaps what excites me the most is the plethora of nettles that have sprouted up in the area our dedicated volunteers cleared by the entrance last year.

Not only are these nettles a testament to the hard work of our volunteers, but they also play a crucial role in supporting the local butterfly population. By providing a habitat for these delightful creatures, the nettles will contribute to the overall health and biodiversity of the nature reserve. To further enhance this effect, we plan to transplant some of these nettles to the main meadow during our upcoming work party at the end of April.

I invite you all to join us in celebrating and nurturing the beauty of Hill Rise nature reserve during this spectacular season.

Spring is coming.... On a wet December morning just before Christmas we put some daffodil bulbs in the ground. They're just peeping through and there should be a colourful display once Spring is truly here. Come and visit Hill Rise and see if you can spot them!
Many thanks to the support from Colleen Atkins in providing the bulbs from ward funds and to the team who braved the rain to plant them!

Hill Rise definitely looks beautiful in the snow, and it makes it easier to see where the wildlife has been.

Hill Rise Local Nature Reserve awarded the coveted Green Flag Award as it is officially recognised as one of the country’s best parks

In a record-breaking year Hill Rise Local Nature reserve is raising its prestigious Green Flag Award

Today, the Hill Rise Residents Team are celebrating after receiving a Green Flag Award for Hill Rise Local Nature Reserve one of 2208 UK winners.

The award is the international quality mark for parks and green spaces

After two years that have seen our parks and green spaces play a vital role for people through lockdowns as a place to relax, exercise and meet friends and family safely, the news that Hill Rise Local Nature Reserve has achieved the Green Flag Award is testament to the hard work and dedication of the volunteers that make the green space a great space that everyone can enjoy.

Speaking on behalf of the Hill Rise Residents Team, Chris Plummer added, we are delighted, thanks to all of the volunteers for your hard work over the past year. Thanks also to everyone in the local community that visits Hill Rise for your inspiring feedback.

Commenting on the news that Hill Rise Local Nature Reserve has met the Green Flag Award standard, Keep Britain Tidy’s Accreditation Manager Paul Todd said: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved in making Hill Rise Local Nature Reserve worthy of a Green Flag Award.

“Hill Rise Local Nature Reserve is a vital green space for the community in Bedford. This award is testament to all the hard work of volunteers, who do so much to ensure that it maintains the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.

Thanks to PCEBS Ltd we now have the pallets needed to get started on the bug hotel at Hill Rise.

We've been out getting inspiration, like these beauties from Forest of Marston Vale and NT The Weir Garden and now we need some help.

If you have any the following spare, we can put them to good use:

Shed felt
Chicken wire
Corrugated cardboard
Hay/Straw
Pine cones
Clay pipe
Broken terracotta pots / tiles
Bamboo canes
Membrane

Great to have such a good crowd at Hill Rise yesterday, with such good weather! Lots of invasive plants were removed, the edges of the larger pond were tidied, and the site is now in good shape to be left to grow over the summer months. Plus there was expert instruction on how to identify and record the different species of butterfly that visit. And as always, coffee and cake all round 😁
Thank you!
