Biddenham Village Pond

Biddenham Village Pond Discover Biddenham's cherished treasure: conservation in action at one of the few remaining village ponds in Bedfordshire

Biddenham village pond, which is over 300 years old, is managed as a haven for wildlife and village amenity by volunteers - The Friends of the Biddenham Village Pond. It is within the Biddenham Conservation Area, features on the Biddenham Heritage Trail and is illustrated on both the village sign on the village green and the Millenium Window in the village church, St James. Visit the pond website

to find out much more about the pond, its wildlife, the Friends and how you could help. You can find the pond by following the footpath - the ancient causeway known as the Coffin Path - between 3 and 5 Gold Lane (MK40 4AN), or join the footpath at its other end behind the parish church of St James, at the bottom of Church End (MK40 4AS).

Reed pile has gone!
Big thanks to Will Jenkin & Janet Field for helping this afternoon, with bagging-up the reeds and moving the bags to the Village Green, for collection by Growing Beds Recycling Centre (GBRS Ltd) tomorrow.
Great to see them gone and clear the pond area ahead of the forthcoming Autumn Pond Work Morning on Saturday 15th November…👍🏻

All the excitement of Christmas is heading our way. But need something to look forward to thereafter in the New Year? Fear not, here are some great dates to add to your 2025 diary.

First, Saturday 22 March our Spring work morning at the pond. Next, Friday 11 April, our first ever Newt Nurdle! Well, as the frogs have persistently refused to appear at our annual Frog Forays in recent years, we've renamed the event in honour of our resplendent newts who usually do grace us with their presence. Finally, for the moment, Sunday 6 July our AGM and Summer Tea.

More details will follow nearer the dates, but do reserve them in your diary and we look forward to seeing you then. And do have a very happy Christmas.

This September our volunteer group is returning to Biddenham Village Pond to help out with some of the pond maintenance. This is one of our favourite sites; it's fairly shallow (in most areas!), it's nice and local to our office in Bedford, and thanks to the water mint it's the sweetest smelling pond we work on! More volunteers are always needed for this and for all our other projects - we've got a full programme of projects every weekday so if you'd like to lend a hand to help wildlife and people please get in touch.

A reminder that our Summer Tea and AGM will be held on Sunday, 7 July in the Church Barn, Church End, from 3.00 pm. Everyone is welcome.

And a new date for your diary, our annual Summer pond dipping will take place the next Sunday, 14 July, from 2.00 pm at the pond. It's a great chance for families to seek out together our pond wildlife. Who knows what you and Chris, our wildlife expert, might discover this year! Please though do leave dogs at home.

Not quite Summer yet, but here’s a date for your Summer diary. Our AGM and Summer Tea will be held this year on Sunday, 7 July at 3.00 pm in the Church Barn. All are welcome and we look forward to seeing you then.

And don’t forget this month’s events at the pond: Saturday, 23 March from 10.00 am our Spring Work Morning, and Friday, 29 March, not just any Friday but Good Friday, from 9.00 pm the Annual Frog Foray.

01/02/2024

With apologies, our wildlife expert, Chris, has had to rearrange the date for the annual frog foray which will now be held a week earlier on Friday, 29 March from 9.00 pm NOT Friday, 5 April as previously posted. If in passing you see a frog, please mention this change in case they miss this post.

28/01/2024

Dates for your diary of two forthcoming events not to be missed:

Saturday, 23 March from 10.00 am our Spring work morning at the pond; and

Friday, 5 April from 9.00 pm the annual frog foray at the pond.

A quick reminder that you’ll be very welcome next Saturday, 11 November from 10.00 am to join us down at the pond for our Autumn work morning. Time to tidy the site ready for Winter and a chance for a chat and some gentle exercise in the fresh air. May the weather be kind for us! Hope to see you then.

27/09/2023

With apologies, please note that the Autumn work morning down at the pond will now be held on Saturday, 11 November not in October as previously notified. We look forward to seeing you then.

Thank you very much for visiting us at the Biddenham Show and it was particularly encouraging to see so much interest in our 'indoor pond dip'. And happily you can visit us again soon!

It's our Autumn work morning at the pond on Saturday, 7 October from 10.00 am. Please join us then if you can with your gardening gloves/gauntlets, kneelers, stout shoes/boots, and any or all of secateurs, loppers, anything else you think might be useful for tidying the site ready for Winter. The work morning is only suitable for children over 14 years of age and they must please be accompanied by an adult responsible for their safety.

We look forward to welcoming you down at the pond.
