2. What can I post on the site? Please remember that Facebook is a public forum and is not the appropriate place for us to discuss specific cases or complaints. In such cases we may message you directly to inform you on how best to resolve your issue. Whilst we encourage healthy debate and appreciate that our users will have opinions on current events, we ask everyone to remember that this site has a large and diverse user base, so please be respectful when making your comments. Our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) is our dedicated department that deals with these enquiries and can be contacted via email at [email protected] or by phone on 01234 795814.


3. What is your deletion policy? Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will remove any comments that are considered to be:

- Offensive
- Abusive
- Threatening
- Deliberately insensitive or inflammatory
- Contain links

We may remove posts that have no connection to the Trust as this site is for local healthcare information. It is inappropriate for us to comment on or host debates about actions being undertaken by other Trusts, other professional bodies or other countries. Where possible we will try to inform a user that their post has been deleted and offer an explanation as to why. However, as this site is not run by a dedicated team, we may not always be able to do this.


4. Why do you mention the names of some patients? Patients that we name in our articles and posts have agreed and signed to do so. Each patient fills out a consent form which must be signed by them and authorised by a responsible clinician if appropriate.


5. How can I contact you if I don’t want to post my questions on here? You can contact the communications team via email at [email protected]. Again please note that emails are not monitored 24 hours a day cannot be used to give medical advice. If you have recently used the Endoscopy services at Bedford Hospital, please join our informal Patient Focus Group to share your experiences and suggestions on Saturday 26 September 2026, 10am–1pm, at the Cauldwell Education Centre, Bedford Hospital.

Your feedback is incredibly valuable and will help us improve the care and experience we provide to our patients, from booking your appointment and arrival at the hospital, through admission and your procedure, to discharge.

We are very proud to share that two of our teams have been shortlisted for the 2026 Health Service Journal (HSJ) Awards.

Being shortlisted is a huge honour, and shines a light on how our teams listen to what matters most to patients, work collaboratively with partners, and test new ways of delivering innovative and compassionate care.

Our Frailty team is shortlisted for the Transforming Care for Older People Award for their work with the Bedfordshire Unscheduled Community Care Hub and the Frailty Virtual Ward. The impact of these initiatives has been remarkable, with 4096 admissions to A&E or acute services being avoided in 2025, giving patients clinical level care without having to go to hospital.

The Bedfordshire Palliative Coordination Service is shortlisted for the Neighbourhood and Community Care Innovation of the Year Award. Working together with Keech Hospice, Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice and other NHS partners, the team has created a single coordination service for adults receiving palliative care. So far in 2026 this has benefited those in our community, as seen through the 14,662 return calls made by the team, and the 2169 Palliative Care Support Worker home visits.

Chief Clinical Transformation Officer Dr Tammy Angel shares: “While we wish our colleagues the very best of luck, they have already achieved something to be incredibly proud of. This shines a light on the dedication, innovation and compassion our teams demonstrate every day.”

The family of Robert and Hailey Foley, a much loved couple who both worked at Bedford Hospital, have donated a memorial bench in their memory.

The donation was unveiled at Bedford Hospital South Wing during an intimate service led by Trust Chaplain Reverend Thomas Samuel, and attended by the family of Robert and Hailey.

Robert worked at Bedford South Wing Hospital for a number of years as a leading surgeon in laparoscopic procedures and Hailey’s nursing career spanned almost 30 years working across different departments at the Trust.

The bench now sits in a peaceful area of Bedford Hospital, South Wing. Near the Main Entrance of the hospital. Though Robert and Hailey are no longer with us, the impact of their life remains forever.

From Tuesday 8 September, a one-stop urology clinic will open at Bedford Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) at Gilbert Hitchcock House.

The clinic is based in Reception C on the first floor, with access to the right hand side of the building.

The one-stop clinic will allow urological diagnostics (urodynamic studies, flexible cystoscopy and prostate biopsy) to be delivered by the urology team on the same visit as the first consultant appointment, reducing the need for patients to return multiple times.

Where possible, we aim to carry out all required tests and assessments in one appointment, rather than asking patients to attend multiple visits at different locations.

Being located within the CDC will mean co-location and easy access to diagnostic services including MRI and CT.

The clinic will be managed by a team of consultants, registrars, specialist nurses, clinical nurse specialists and healthcare support workers.

Patients will be contacted if their appointment is taking place in the Community Diagnostic Centre. Patients should attend the location on their appointment letter, unless you have been told otherwise.

The new dedicated facility is a huge improvement and will make a difference to patient and staff experience.

The Trust is honoured to have a loyal and dedicated team of volunteers who give upwards of 30,000 hours of their time each year to provide invaluable support to patients and staff.

We are delighted that Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Charity has recently reached the historic milestone of recruiting their 500th volunteer, Promise.

Promise has joined as a Macmillan Support Volunteer to provide support and information to patients, family, friends, carers and staff.

Lisa, Volunteer Co-ordinator for Recruitment & Support at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Charity, said: “We are so thrilled to have reached this impressive milestone. It’s truly amazing that so many people are willingly giving their time to assist staff, patients and visitors at our hospitals.”

Dr McNamara, Consultant in Palliative Care, will be retiring in September following many years of incredible service to Bedford Hospital and the local community.

Penny joined the Palliative Care team in 2000, and has been instrumental in shaping and developing palliative care services across Bedfordshire.

She said: "It has been a privilege to serve the people of Bedford in both the charity sector and at the hospital. I have cherished the opportunity to work alongside such dedicated staff in all areas of Bedfordshire Hospitals. I have also been very fortunate to hold varied non clinical roles, allowing me to train the next generation of young doctors the importance of compassionate palliative care."

Dr McNamara’s compassion, composure and kindness will be missed by staff and patients alike. We wish her all the best for the future.

Bedfordshire Disability Sports Festival, a free event to empower and support children and families, is fast approaching.

Organised by our specialist Paediatric Physiotherapists, the event offers children with physical disabilities in Bedfordshire and surrounding areas the opportunity to take part in a variety of disability sports and find out more information about how to access different sporting activities.

Some of our patients have already benefited from disability sports, like Frankie.

"I'm Frankie and I'm almost 9 years old, I have two older brothers and we all love football. I watch my brothers play every weekend and wanted to start playing myself. With the challenges of having cerebral palsy (CP), I found it quite difficult to find somewhere inclusive. My mum found a football group especially for children with CP and now I play once a month and my brothers come to support me. It makes me feel the same as them and all my school friends. Everyone should have the option to join a group and play a sport."

Congratulations to the Day Treatment Unit (DTU) team at Bedford Hospital for achieving Silver in their latest ward accreditation!

Through the hard work, commitment, and determination of the entire team, the unit has successfully implemented positive changes, with safeguarding patients, patient safety, and person-centred care scoring particularly highly.

Patients spoke highly of both the staff and their experiences while on the unit, and staff demonstrated excellent knowledge and a strong understanding of their roles and responsibilities. Colleagues reported feeling valued and respected, and leadership provided ongoing support.

Well done to everyone involved!
