“We have more in common than that which divides us.”

Rest in peace Jo ❤️

Today marks ten years since Jo was killed.

We remember Jo as a mother, sister, daughter, wife, friend, campaigner and public servant. We remember her courage, her compassion, and her belief that we have more in common than that which divides us.

This is a day for reflection. It is also a moment to recommit to the work Jo inspired: building a kinder, fairer, more tolerant world, and choosing connection over division.

A few weeks ago something quietly changed in Nottinghamshire County Council meetings.

Supplementary questions were abolished.

Here’s what that actually means:
✅ Councillors must submit questions in advance.
✅ A pre-prepared answer is read out loud in the meeting.

And then… that’s it.
❌No follow-up allowed.
❌No clarification permitted.
❌No “hang on, can you explain that?”
Just a prepared answer read out, and the meeting moves on….

To get any more information your Councillor has to submit ANOTHER written request and then wait up to ten more days for a response.

Reform say they’ve made this change to keep meetings running on time.

But ask yourself this;
❓Is a Council better run when meetings are fast?
❓Or is a Council better run when decisions are openly discussed, properly questioned and visible to the public?

Scrutiny isn’t a delay. Scrutiny is the whole point.

When the decisions being made involve major public services and millions of pounds in taxpayers money, “no supplementary questions” is a big change that should worry everyone in Nottinghamshire.

A few months ago we asked our members what they thought about social media for children under 16. Juliet Campbell MP asked people across Broxtowe what they thought, and the government asked people right across the UK.

The response was clear.

If the tech companies won’t make their online spaces safe for our children, then our children cannot be in those spaces.

We’re really pleased to hear this strong announcement from the government today. Putting the safety of children first is a top priority. 🌹

Social media will be banned for all children under 16, UK PM Keir Starmer announces.

Fantastic work from Stapleford and Trowell Boundary Brook Action Group (SATBBAG) this weekend - making a real difference to tackle flooding in their area.

This community group is going from strength to strength, and we’re proud that Juliet Campbell MP is backing them all the way 🙌🌹

When our councillors and canvassers talk to parents and families in Broxtowe, online safety for children is a top issue - so this move by the government, forcing big tech companies to put children’s safety before profit, is a very welcome one 🌹

The Government has given tech firms, such as Apple and Google, three months to implement changes to stop children sending and receiving explicit images on their devices or face new legislation 🚨
