Barrmill Open Garden Day Report - 30 May 2026

Turned out a great day, as weather forecast for rain stayed mainly dry until the end of the afternoon. The breeziness of the last few days was over and today was actually a very calm peaceful day.

Big thanks to all who attended. We had visitors from Beith and Burnhouse as well as further away places like Prestwick, Coylton and Kilmarnock who came up specially to see the park gardens and trails.

To the lady from Burnhouse I saw in the centre, I was told you didn't get chance to go round park as rain had just come on at the end.
Please get in touch and we'll give you a guided tour on a day that suits.

Many thanks to the 3 volunteers from Scottish Gardens. Loved showing you round and hope to see you again at Beith, when we hold our own Open Garden on 18 July.

Thanks to our volunteers Lynda, Christie, Julie and Fiona, also doggy friend Bella for making it such a welcoming day for the visitors and providing kitchen refreshments. Thanks to Margaret for home baking.

Visitors enjoyed walking over the rustic stone bridge into the park; the drystane beds and d***s, and along the tunnel of trees, the Vale Grove woodland fairy trail, an avenue of Allium at the moment and along to the Druids grove.

Fiona's psychedelic staircase was then ascended to the train on the hill. We took in the Horseshoe mindfulness bench back down in the grove , then down to the playpark and Celtic Tree Circle with the Wildflower meadow throwing up quite a few interesting plant species. Lots of Pignut and Columbines. The new nest boxes were noted, then we arrived at the Beechgrove garden boardwalk, and the Fernery leading uphill alongside the stream, the Vale View path back up to the bridge.

We also managed to get some tidying up done around centre, allotment and Vale view paths. Any Knotweed appearing on streamside banking was pulled out and I only found one piece of Himalyan Balsam to pull. If we keep on top of it, will be eradicated this year.

Park and hall both need more volunteers. We hope you appreciate the amount of work that goes into Barrmill and will help support in any way you can. Many more events and activities could be organised in the centre and in the park, if people come forward to assist. We've done them all in the past, and they could all be done again. We just need the will to do them, and good old teamwork. As they say in school, 'Team work makes the dream work'.

All donations raised today will go to Scottish Gardens charity.

If you have any photos, please post them in or message the page.

Best wishes,
Carrick

Call for Volunteers

Barrmill park is struggling for volunteers and time to do all the work needed to keep the place as good as it usually is.
The park group has had no support last year and no support this year while the committee of the hall transitions from old to new.

We are only just managing to look after park, one workday a month, 6 volunteers.
We really miss the weekly Wednesday workday.

This year there has been no maintainance around the community centre, no hanging baskets and no grass cutting.
If anyone local would like to adopt this area would be a great help. We can show you what to do.
