Tonight at Belfast City Council, I made it absolutely clear:

There can be no justification none for the glorification of terrorism.

The ongoing attempts by Sinn Fรฉin to eulogise Bobby Sands are deeply offensive to victims and have no place in any modern, shared society.

At the same time, they are pushing to lower even further the already controversial 15% threshold for Irish language street signage another example of political priorities completely out of step with the real concerns of ratepayers.

While people are crying out for better services, safer communities and value for money, Sinn Fรฉin are focused on division and symbolism.

A strong week for Unionism in Belfast delivering results where others offer only noise.

At Belfast City Council, we secured a vote highlighting the complete failure to act on the unauthorised Bobby Sands statue. Planning rules matter and they must apply to everyone, not be ignored for political convenience.

Meanwhile, internal divisions within nationalism continue to deepen, with public infighting surrounding the resignation of an SDLP councillor exposing a movement more focused on itself than the people it claims to represent.

Credit also to my colleague, Cllr. James Lawlor, for standing firm and ensuring the Armed Forces Covenant was adopted at Council despite sustained opposition from nationalist parties.

Supporting those who serve and have served should never be controversial.

And following the shocking car bomb in Dunmurry, Sinn Fรฉinโ€™s attempt to speak out of both sides of their mouth has been laid bare. You cannot ride two horses. The public see through it.
When stripped back, all that remains is name-calling and deflection no substance, no solutions, no leadership.

Unionism, on the other hand, is showing clarity, consistency and delivery.

The attempted assassination of President Donald Trump is a disgraceful and dangerous escalation of political hatred.

This is what happens when toxic rhetoric is normalised and opponents are relentlessly demonised it creates an environment where violence becomes inevitable.

Let there be no ambiguity this was an attack on democracy.

Those who have spent years stoking division and whipping up hostility cannot wash their hands of the consequences. Words have consequences and we are now seeing that play out in the most serious way possible.

Political differences must never descend into violence. Democracy is settled at the ballot box, not at the end of a gun.

This must be a line in the sand. Political violence, in any form, must be condemned outright and confronted head on.

Anything less is a failure of leadership.

DUP Statement

This evening, Belfast City Council passed a DUP motion, condemning the unauthorised er****on of the Bobby Sands statue on public land and calling for full transparency and a review of the decision not to take enforcement action.

We all must be equal under the law and equally subject to the law.

Sinn Fein representatives, alongside First Minister Michelle Oโ€™Neill, unveiled the memorial to Hunger Striker Bobby Sands, despite it being erected without planning permission, and this evening argued against enforcement action being taken.

The motion was about a memorial and whether planning law is applied equally and without exception. It canโ€™t be one rule for republicans and another rule for small business owners.

Attempts to deflect and shut down debate were made tonight but they failed, Council has now set a clear expectation for transparency and accountability.

๐Ÿšจ Breaking ๐Ÿšจ

This is a damning ruling.

Belfast City Council has been found to have acted unlawfully, and that reflects a serious failure within the organisation. Council officers have a clear duty to ensure decisions are lawful this judgment shows that duty has not been met.

There will be serious concern across the Unionist community, many of whom already view the Council as a cold house. This ruling will only deepen that perception.

This cannot be brushed aside. There must be full accountability and immediate steps taken to restore confidence in how this Council operates.

The ratepayer expects better and they deserve better.

Wishing Gary Middleton MLA all the very best as he steps down from the Northern Ireland Assembly.

I first got to know Gary back in 2016 while working at Stormont, and always found him to be genuine, hardworking and committed to public service.

Politics isnโ€™t always easy, but Gary has given many years of dedicated service. I commend him for being so open and honest about his mental health and wish him well.

โ€œOver the last few months, I have been suffering from a bout of ill-health which has significantly limited my ability to represent my constituents in the way I always have.

I had hoped to be able to return to work and to recover but I have come to the point of accepting that if I am to focus on getting back to full health, I cannot do this whilst remaining in public office.

It would have been easier for me to withdraw from the political arena quietly and without explanation but I wanted my constituents and the wider community to understand that I am leaving public life because I am suffering significant mental health challenges.

I am journeying through a difficult experience and have been for some time. I am receiving treatment thanks to the wonderful services afforded to me by our National Health Service. The support and encouragement from my family and friends, combined with the expert treatment I am receiving has given me hope and I can see a glimmer of light in what has been a very dark tunnel.

In making this statement I want to give encouragement to those who may be on a similar journey by highlighting that help is available. I have learned in recent times that itโ€™s ok not to be ok.

I want to thank all those who have supported me in Foyle over the years and who bestowed the privilege of electing me, first into Local Government and then to the Northern Ireland Assembly.

Finally, I want to thank all my colleagues in the DUP for their support and friendship, to my staff for their loyalty and to my wife and family who have been my rock during this period. I will always be grateful for all the support shown to me.

I will resign as a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly tomorrow (Friday 10th April).

As I depart the public stage, I want to wish all those who serve the public and with whom I have had the privilege to serve alongside, regardless of party affiliations, every best wish for the future.โ€

โ€œAs the sole unionist MLA in Foyle, Gary Middleton has been a dedicated and steadfast servant to people across the city of Londonderry and surrounding areas. Since 2015, he has been a strong and consistent voice in the Northern Ireland Assembly and was never afraid to stand up for what he believed was right.

Elected in May 2011 as a Councillor at just 20 years of age, Gary was often the youngest in the room but earned the respect of colleagues through his incredible ability to articulate the concerns of the people of Foyle.

In being such a clear and consistent voice for Unionism in Foyle, Gary has at times faced threats from republicans. That pressure never silenced him nor deterred him, he continued to stand firm for his constituents and his principles.

While we deeply regret that Gary is leaving public service, we will do all we can to support him. Garyโ€™s focus must now be on his recovery, and he will have the support of colleagues, both inside and outside our ranks, on his journey.

On behalf of the Democratic Unionist Party, I want to sincerely thank Gary for his years of service and dedication. Many people in the Foyle constituency have been positively impacted as a result of Garyโ€™s devotion to his community. We wish him every blessing for the days ahead.โ€

โš ๏ธ Security Alert โ€“ Orangefield Park

I am aware of reports this afternoon that the PSNI are currently examining a suspicious object in the Orangefield Park area of East Belfast.

A number of cordons have been put in place and the public are being asked to avoid the park and surrounding area while this is dealt with.

Please follow the advice of the police and allow them the space to carry out their work safely.

I will share further updates when more information becomes available.
