More sun - more fun! 🌞

Our troop of Gorillas got some ‘ice lollies’ over the weekend to help them regulate their body temperature and provide some food based enrichment.

By combining pieces of fruit and freezing them in water, we were able to create healthy, nutritious snacks with the additional bonus of exposing them to a range of textures, smells and flavours whilst helping them cool down.

Featured in the video is our western lowland gorilla, Kamili - clearly enjoying her special treat!

Today we’re celebrating world Otter day! 🦦

Here’s what makes Otters special:

🐾They are known for being some of the most playful wild animals.
🐾They are one of the few animals known to use tools regularly, such us using rocks to crack open shellfish.
🐾Some species hold hands while sleeping so they don’t drift apart in water.
🐾They help ecosystems and protect kelp forests by eating sea urchins, which would otherwise overgraze kelp.

At Belfast Zoo, we have a spot necked otter, called Lolo!

Happy Birthday to our Golden Lion Tamarin, Rico! 🎈

We were delighted to celebrate Rico's 18th birthday together! 🍌

Our keeper Kirsty and Senior Keeper Demi made sure to make the occasion extra special by helping organise a tasty enrichment item for Rico and his neighbours - a fruit salad tree!

Rico was delighted - curiously exploring the contents of the branches, carefully picking out pieces of banana which were clearly his favourite.

Do you have a passion for wildlife, conservation and inspiring the next generation? We’re looking for an enthusiastic and creative Education Officer to help deliver engaging learning experiences at Belfast Zoo.

This exciting role will involve:
🌍 Delivering conservation and wildlife education programmes
🎓 Working with schools, community groups and visitors of all ages
🦎 Caring for education animals and developing learning resources
📣 Supporting events, media activity and marketing campaigns
🤝 Building partnerships with organisations including schools, BIAZA and EAZA

From curriculum-linked workshops and teacher training to conservation messaging and public engagement, this role is at the heart of connecting people with wildlife.

If you’re an excellent communicator with experience in education, conservation or public engagement, we’d love to hear from you.

Happy Birthday to our Western Lowland Gorilla, Namoki! 🎉

To celebrate, Namoki received an enrichment mystery box filled to the brim with tasty snacks🎁.

Namoki was curious and carefully examined the box, helping herself to a few snacks before letting Gugas take over to put it's contents through a close up-inspection.

Gugas, did most of the hard work by enthusiastically shaking the box and emptying it of it's contents as the rest of the Gorillas tucked in and enjoyed their 'birthday dinner'.

Kofi, the youngest member of the Troop had expressed a particular curiosity in the box, continuing to search it further before utilising it as a stepping stool to access his swinging rope! 🐵

Thank you to keepers Simon and Maria who facilitated and helped organise this special party!
