Over the year both payrolled employee numbers and earnings have increased. There were also slight decreases in the LFS unemployment and economic inactivity rates, with an increase in the employment rate.

The number of employees receiving pay through HMRC PAYE in NI in May 2026 was 820,100, which is unchanged over the month and an increase of 1.3% over the year.

The department was notified of 90 confirmed redundancies in May. The latest twelve-month totals of both proposed & confirmed redundancies are the lowest seen in the year to date.

Northern Ireland’s population was estimated at 1.93 million in 2024.

⚽️At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, only two competing countries have smaller populations - Curaçao and Cape Verde.

The United States has the largest population, at over 340 million.
