The past few days in Belfast have been difficult to watch, and I think a lot of people are feeling the same sense of frustration and helplessness, and wanting to do something to help.

One way to help to make a difference is by volunteering with Victim Support NI.

Our volunteers support people who have been affected by crime, whether that’s offering emotional support at a really difficult time or being there for someone on the day they have to go to court. Often, this support comes when people are reliving one of the worst days of their lives.

We provide full training, cover travel and out-of-pocket expenses, and there are a range of opportunities available.

We are currently looking for volunteers, including Witness Service roles in:

Belfast (Monday and Wednesday)
Antrim (Monday and Thursday)
Derry & Strabane (Monday–Friday)
Downpatrick & Newry (Monday–Friday)
Dungannon
Eniskillen

Community Service volunteer roles are also open all year round.

If you’ve been thinking about how you can support the community right now, this is a really worthwhile way to do it.

We are shocked and saddened by last night’s disorder in Belfast. If you are affected by hate crime over the coming days, or at any other time of the year, you can reach out to the Hate Crime Advocacy Service for help. You do not have to have reported the crime to the police to avail of our services.

The Hate Crime Advocacy Service supports victims of hate crime in partnership with our external advocacy partners: Migrant Centre NI; The Rainbow Project NI; Disability Action NI. This scheme aims to improve support to victims of hate crime, encourage reporting and increase confidence in, and improve access to, the criminal justice system.

Pride is a time to celebrate LGBTQ+ communities, visibility and progress. June is a time when many organisations add rainbows to their messaging. While visibility matters, real support cannot be limited to one month of the year, because hate crime does not stop on 30 June.

At Victim Support NI, we are committed to supporting people all year round. Through our Hate Crime Advocacy Service, delivered in partnership with The Rainbow Project, we provide free, confidential support to those affected by LGBTQ+ hate crime.

If you or someone you know needs support, you are not alone. We are here to listen, support and advocate.

Our community volunteers are often the first point of support for victims of crime, offering a listening ear, understanding, and practical help when it is needed most.

Through training and ongoing support, they help people build resilience and begin their recovery journey.

If you would like to make a positive difference in your local community, we welcome new volunteers all year round.

During why not consider signing up to volunteer with our Witness Service? You will be supporting victims and witnesses at court. Our Witness Service offers emotional support and practical information to people going to court. This can include offering witnesses a chance to visit the court before giving evidence, explaining court procedures, accompanying a victim or witness into the courtroom, and offering the opportunity to talk over the case when it has ended.
