The Police Ombudsman’s Office has been notified about the discharge of a firearm by police during an incident in Downpatrick today (31 May) when a police officer was struck by a stolen patrol vehicle.

Director of Investigations, Nikki Davis, said:

“Our thoughts are with the police officer who has been injured during the incident in Downpatrick and their colleague who was present.

“In line with standard procedures, the Police Ombudsman’s Office was notified by the PSNI about the discharge of a firearm and our investigators attended the scene. We have been gathering relevant information, including any available video evidence, to assess the circumstances”.

Police Ombudsman investigators have today (Tuesday 26 May 2026) arrested a serving PSNI officer on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and misconduct in public office relating to abuse of position for sexual purposes.

Following a referral from the Chief Constable last year, the officer was previously arrested on suspicion of similar but separate offences, as well as intimidating a witness and misusing police I.T. systems.

Great engagement as always with the young people - appreciate their time and participation and look forward to the next meeting.

At the latest Youth and Policing Partnership Forum meeting last week, young people spent the evening discussing key policing issues with the Police Service of Northern Ireland, the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland, and the Northern Ireland Policing Board with the aim of developing a better understanding of the agencies’ roles and also sharing their own voice on policing matters that affect their lives and communities 🩵🩷🧡💚❤️
