There is still a common myth that only physical abuse "counts" as domestic abuse, but this is not the case.

Victims and survivors of domestic abuse often tell us about the coercive and controlling behaviour they have experienced. This can include emotional abuse such as gaslighting, controlling what they wear, isolating them from friends and family, or making them feel guilty for saying "no".

No one has the right to make you feel this way. If you or someone you know needs support, we're here to listen.

We’re sometimes asked, "Should I say domestic violence or domestic abuse❓"

There isn’t a wrong answer, but the terms can mean different things to different people. While domestic violence often refers to physical violence, domestic abuse is a broader term that includes emotional, psychological, sexual, financial and coercive or controlling behaviour.

The most important thing to remember is that abuse doesn't have to involve physical violence to be abuse.
