Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Every year, Women’s Aid support hundreds of older women who have experienced abuse for many years, even decades.

In 2024/2025 alone, we supported hundreds of women over the age of 65 right across NI.

Domestic abuse doesn’t have an age limit and it’s never okay.

Employers, are you ❓

We were delighted to attend the NICVA Summit on Wednesday and speak with organisations about the vital role workplaces can play in responding to domestic abuse.

Introducing Safe Leave is an important step, but also ensuring managers and staff have the knowledge and confidence to support employees is just as crucial.

Our specialist training team helps employers:
✅ Understand domestic abuse and its impact in the workplace
✅ Implement Safe Leave effectively
✅ Create a safer, more supportive workplace culture

Women’s Aid and National Women's Council of Ireland yesterday hosted a special visit by the Taoiseach, Mícháel Martin, who met with women directly impacted by domestic abuse and human trafficking.

As part of our joint work on the All-Island Violence Against Women Working Group, both organisations discussed the importance of tackling violence against women and girls across the island. The discussion focused on addressing barriers faced by women including access to safe accommodation for survivors, the importance of strengthening cross-border protection orders, and working together to create a safer island for everyone.

We wish to sincerely thank the Taoiseach for his time, and an extra special thank you to the Irish Secretariat for helping make this meaningful visit happen.

Earlier this week, Women’s Aid attended the NOTA Conference , an all-island event focused on “Responses to Disclosures of Sexual and Domestic Abuse: Best Practice Approaches.”

The conference brought practitioners together to explore effective, survivor-centred responses for victims and survivors of abuse.

Julie-Ann from our Survivor Engagement Group spoke powerfully about the importance of listening to survivors, empowering their voices, and taking meaningful action. She highlighted how working in partnership with survivors is essential to creating positive change across our systems and services.

If you ever need support, please know that support services are here to listen.
