As we age, our bodies don't regulate our temperatures as well as they used to. So, for older people, especially those with health conditions, heatwaves can be dangerous.

Our Chief Executive, Paul Farmer, spoke to BBC Breakfast this morning about how older people can stay safe and how important it is to check in on the older people around you, especially in a heatwave.

Find out how to keep older people safe, and how to spot the first signs of heat exhaustion or heatstroke: https://bit.ly/4fWRi3e

‘Unstoppable and determined – that’s our Member Forum driving positive change through their Power of Attorney Campaign!

Taking another step forward in their campaign, Forum members (left to right) Graham, Allison, Chris, Paddy, Martin and Campaigns Lead Stephanie are making a video with our charity partner Aiken PR to raise awareness that Northern Ireland is still waiting for Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) to be implemented and being the only place in the UK and Ireland where it is not available.

Giving someone Power of Attorney means that you give another person the right to make decisions about your care and welfare. This is called a health and welfare LPA.

Members highlight in the film their shock that England has had LPA in place for 20 years now and their outrage at the delay in introducing it here.

They also stress that most people across Northern Ireland are not aware of this and they want to take action to change this.

Members will be taking more action to ensure the voices and rights of people living with dementia are heard and respected. Watch this space!’

What a lovely morning we had celebrating Volunteers’ Week – even if it was a little later than planned! 😊
It was wonderful to spend time with some of our incredible Telephone Befrienders and service users, sharing great company and conversation.

A huge thank you to Refresh Cafe for their warm hospitality – and for keeping us well supplied with delicious scones and traybakes! ☕🍰

Most of all, we are so grateful for the dedication, kindness and commitment of our Telephone Befrienders. You truly make a difference, and we think you are all amazing! 💛

From Isolation to Full Social Lives – Participant Journeys with Engage with Age

A case study from Barry*

“In his early 80s, Barry faced loss, illness, and social isolation. Referred to Engage with Age, he started with the Friday Dance Group in East Belfast. That small step opened doors – now he attends multiple dance groups, the Keeping In Touch Group in Finaghy, a local choir, and a walking club outside Engage With Age.

Barry says his confidence has increased, his good humour has returned, and his calendar is full of friends and activities. His life has transformed and is vastly different from a few years ago when he was experiencing grief and ill health. He is now working on taking on volunteering responsibilities with one of the Engage With Age groups.”

* Participant’s name has been changed to protect privacy.

Engage With Age supported almost 2,600 people last year alone.

We need your help to ensure we can maintain our much needed befriending support, group activities, fun social events, and keep connecting with isolated older adults across Belfast.

How to help:
Fundraise: There are so many ways to fundraise such as a bake sale, hosting a coffee morning, pub quiz or even a sky dive! We would be very happy to support you. Please email [email protected] for further information.
Donate: For as little as £2 a month or a single donation, visit https://www.justgiving.com/charity/engagewithage.
Just £3 could pay for mileage for a volunteer or staff to host an activity.
£10 could pay for a weekly phone call to 5 older people who might otherwise feel isolated.
Volunteer: Interested in volunteering for telephone befriending or helping with group activities?

A Volunteer’s experience: “Engage with Age is just like my extended family”

In 2025/26 Engage with Age supported almost 2,000 people and had over 16,000 attendances at activities. 100% of participants most recently surveyed said they had made new friends at activity groups, with 75% meeting up outside of activity groups.

This video from one of our dedicated volunteers helps show just how much difference Engage with Age can make to people’s lives.

With the increasingly uncertain and constrained funding environment, we are asking for donations to keep these vital lifelines running. Your support ensures we can maintain our crucial befriending, group activities and fun social events, and keep connecting with isolated older adults.
