STRANMILLIS YMCA PLANNING CONSULTATION

The proposal involves the removal of the existing prefabricated buildings on the site, which currently accommodate childrenโ€™s and youth services, and the development of a new, purpose-built community hub. The new facility will enable Belfast YMCA to retain and continue providing its existing childrenโ€™s and youth services from a modern, fit-for-purpose building.

As part of the pre-application community consultation process, a public drop-in consultation event will take place:

Wednesday 14 October 2026
3.00pm โ€“ 7.00pm
Belfast YMCA, 56-58 Knightsbridge Park, Stranmillis, Belfast, BT9 5EH

The event will provide an opportunity to view the proposals, speak directly with members of the project team and provide feedback.

This new park will be welcome investment to the Roden Street area and will see more disability access equipment for disabled children

This is something that local kids lobbied me for when I was Lord Mayor and I am so glad to see the work beginning ๐Ÿฅฐ Iโ€™m sure the trampoline will be a great hit!

The anger at both the Chief Constable and Secretary of State is totally justifiable. People everywhere expect the rule of law to be upheld and justice to be done.

It remains inexplicable that the rights of Portadown District were trumped by obstruction of the road alone. I donโ€™t believe that alone to be the case.

The only way to explain these decisions is to understand the actual threat that was presented.

If there was a real threat to life, the public deserves to know and to see in clear terms what violence was planned. They need to know where that threat came from and what it entailed.

Rumours have been widely circulating about dissident republicans; fi****ms being brought to the area and incendiary devices being stocked up along the roadway.

Only the Chief Constable can give the public the information they need to know. Issuing letters alone will be wholly insufficient if what we have just witnessed was appeasement and acquiescence in the face of planned threats of terror.

Statement By

DUP Leader Rt. Hon. Gavin Robinson MP

For 28 years and 52 weeks per year, the Portadown District Orange LOL No. 1 respected the lawful outcome of the Parades Commission even though they disagreed with the decisions. They rightly, like the majority in Northern Ireland, believe the rule of law, not mob rule, must prevail.

Through the Parades Commission, the High Court and the Court of Appeal Portadown Orange has won significant victories whilst the response to those victories by Sinn Fein has exposed their hypocrisy.

It has been clear in recent days that due to the actions of Sinn Fein and the total disregard for the recent determination in favour of a parade that the PSNI cannot ensure the safe completion of the parade.

The decision of the Chief Constable to refer the matter to the Secretary of State and his conclusion that the parade cannot proceed is a direct result of Republican agitation, mobilisation and the looming threats of potential violence.

These decisions are a mistake, and send profound signals that the country should be run on force of numbers and who shouts the loudest.

The framework for both parading and protests now lies in tatters and the rule of law has been fundamentally undermined.

Michelle O'Neill has been perceived to act as a substitute to judges whilst appearing to demand that both the Chief Constable and the Secretary of State do as she demands.

Unionists have watched with increasing anger as they witness the โ€˜do as I say not as I do approachโ€™ of Sinn Fein.

The PSNI must now pursue the evidence of lawbreaking without fear or favour. The investigation must follow the evidence wherever it leads and the PSNI must be transparent and keep the public informed of each step in the investigation. Those who have broken the law must be held to account.

The Secretary of State is going to have to explain what his Government intends to do to restore confidence in the rule of law.

We will not allow Sinn Fein or the actions of violent republicans to be rewarded by a crisis that would punish the law-abiding majority of people in Northern Ireland rather than those responsible for wrongdoing and orchestrating mob-rule.

There are those within unionism who would have us abandon our responsibilities, walk away from government and surrender the mandate entrusted to us by the electorate. They would urge us to hand all power to the UK Government and the Secretary of State with unionism having no influence and no plan for how it achieves its objectives.

We will not sacrifice the stability of Northern Ireland and plunge it into a further crisis which would allow Sinn Fein an escape route from spotlight and accountability.

Recent days and weeks have demonstrated that there would be no place for anyone with the faintest sense of a British identity in a so-called New Ireland. The scenes of Michelle Oโ€™Neill and Mary Lou McDonald will live long in the minds of anyone with a British identity. No one will not be lulled into such folly.

For two weeks, Republicans have played to the gallery and their New Ireland project lies in tatters. Their disdain and disrespect for unionists has been properly exposed.
