Life can sometimes bring unexpected costs that are difficult to manage. If you’re a current, former or retired civil servant or a dependant of one, we may be able to help.

This can include essential household items, such as fridges, cookers and beds. If you own your property and need a new boiler, we may also be able to help with this.

We are here to support you with unexpected costs, such as essential travel, hospital visits, or removal expenses if you need to move home.

If you're worried about essential household arrears, such as Council Tax, our specialist team of Money Advisors can talk through your situation and explore the support available to you.

Other financial support we offer includes: funeral expenses, independent living and mobility equipment, and counselling.

We understand that everyone’s situation is different, so every application is considered carefully, taking your individual circumstances into account.

Grief is something that we all have to face at some point in our. For when those hard times come, it’s crucial to have the right tools and support, whether you’re supporting someone else or experiencing bereavement yourself.

For this crucial session, leading UK psychotherapist, bestselling author and founder of Grief Works, Julia Samuel MBE is coming together with some of the wonderful volunteers from the Civil Service Grief Café to discuss how best to support yourself and others.

The variety of speakers for this session will tackle different perspectives of grief bereavement, to cover the complexity and range of experiences that people go through when it comes to bereavement.

Grief Café founder and lead Keela Shackwell-Smith will be one of several volunteers from the Civil Service Grief Café joining this session. Each will be bringing a different perspective.

For example, Grief Café Funke, who also founded The Waiting Room and Always A Mum, is drawing on her experience to support women and families who have gone through infertility and/or baby loss.

Volunteers Catherine, Liz and Andrea have all faced the loss of partners, siblings and children respectively. As they all share their experiences during this session, attendees will be able gain practical, compassionate insight into supporting bereaved children and families – and leave better equipped to create understanding, inclusive spaces around grief.

Vidyamala Burch OBE, is an award-winning author and the co-founder Breathworks. Ahead of Breathworks' free online sessions at our Mental Health and Wellbeing Conference this year, this is her story.

Aged 17, Vidyamala suffered major spinal injuries, which resulted in multiple surgeries, a complex back condition and chronic pain. After initially feeling angry, despondent and hopeless, she began practicing meditation daily and exploring mindfulness. The results were life changing.

She reclaimed her life through mindfulness and compassion, pioneering an approach now used by many thousands of people.

In Vidyamala's session, you'll discover how tiny, enjoyable changes to nutrition, hydration, breathing, sleep, nature connection, and desk exercises can transform your working life. Small, simple, and fun beats big and daunting – that’s how lasting change actually sticks.

The Breathworks team will also help us kick off each day of the conference in the right state of mind, with daily morning mindfulness sessions.

On Friday 9 October, members of the Civil Service OCD Network and Anxiety UK will come together to build greater understanding of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This session will go beyond common stereotypes to explore what OCD really is, how it affects people's lives, and how we can all help create working environments that support colleagues living with the condition.

One of our session speakers is Marisa Wheadon, Co-Chair of the Civil Service OCD Network. Marisa is passionate about improving understanding of OCD and supporting colleagues affected by it. Drawing on both lived experience and advocacy work, she helps challenge misconceptions and promote inclusion across government.

Fellow Co-Chair Rebecca H***e will also bring her lived experience to the discussion, having lived with OCD since her early teens. She has previously been involved with HMRC's Mental Health Network and the WMBC Disability Working Group.

Joining them will be Dave Smithson, former Director of Communications and External Affairs at Anxiety UK and now a freelance associate. Dave will share his expertise from supporting people affected by anxiety, stress and anxiety-based depression.

Together, they will provide valuable insight into what OCD is, how it can affect people, and what we can do to better support those living with the condition.

This free online session is part of our Mental Health And Wellbeing Conference, running 5-9 October. Follow the link for free access to this session and a wide range of expert-led discussions exploring mental health and wellbeing: https://ow.ly/rNzc50ZFIwO

Writing a Will ensures that your estate is distributed according to your wishes. You can choose who gets what, protecting your family and preventing the state from deciding who will inherit.

You may also wish to leave a gift to a charity in your Will ensuring that you can continue to offer support for years to come. Last year alone we were able to offer support over 73,000 times but we were only able to do this because of people's generous donations. By leaving a gift in your Will to the Charity for Civil Servants, you'll be part of an umbrella of support.

Whether you’re interested in personal growth, supporting your team, navigating new technologies, or understanding specific mental health challenges, we’ll be running free online sessions for you at this year’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Conference (5-9 October).

Our Venn diagrams highlight how different themes interact and overlap throughout the week, helping you identify the sessions most relevant to you. They also showcase the breadth of topics and speakers that’ll be featured across the five-days.

Leading support organisations will be delivering vital sessions on supporting ourselves and others. The Survivors Trust, Woman’s Trust and Grief Works (led by Julia Samuel MBE) will explore how to better support people affected by sexual abuse, domestic violence and bereavement.

Mental health-focused sessions will help increase understanding of specific challenges and how to respond to them. Carrie Carlisle and chair-elect of Mind, Clarke Carlisle, will discuss navigating adverse mental health from both the carer and cared-for perspective. And one of this year’s session partners, Charis, will explore the relationship between debt and mental health, as well as the support they offer.

Technology will be another key theme throughout this year’s conference. Headline partners Accenture, mental health experts Thrive, and acclaimed author Jamie Bartlett, will examine the impact of AI on everyday life, the workplace and mental health care.

Mindfulness will provide an anchor throughout the week, with Breathworks delivering a morning mindfulness session each day. Their CEO, Vidyamala Burch, will also lead a session on managing pain, fatigue and stress through mind-body approaches.

Once registered, you'll have access to all of the conference's free online sessions. Even if you can't attend every session live, recordings will be available on demand afterwards.

We hope that you’ll take time out of your busy week to join us and dedicate some time to your mental health and wellbeing, in the workplace and beyond.

Thrive Mental Wellbeing will be bringing their mental health expertise to two sessions at our Mental Health and Wellbeing Conference 2026. Thrive are a company dedicated to creating evidence-based digital tools to detect, prevent and treat mental health conditions.

On 8 October, Dr Oleks Lugovyi and Thrive CEO Dr Andres Fonseca will run two free online sessions, covering two very different topics within the mental health space.

In his session, Dr Oleks invites you to “Learn how to turn uncertainty into an opportunity for growth with practical techniques to improve emotional wellbeing, build resilience, and thrive during life's inevitable challenges.”

Dr Andres Fonseca’s session will focus on the integration of AI into mental health care, and what we need to consider as we aim for safe applications of the technology in this space.

Mental health, AI and practical techniques for growth are all themes that are going to be revisited throughout our conference, so if Thrive’s sessions interest you, there will be more sessions covering similar themes across the week.
