Today, something changes. Not the ship. Not the stories. But how we tell them.

We are now Royal Navy Museums: HMS Caroline.

Behind HMS Caroline are people whose lives were shaped by service, conflict and resilience. Sailors who experienced the largest naval battle of the First World War. Families affected by war. Communities connected to Belfast’s maritime story.

At the heart of our new vision is storytelling, linking Navy and Nation with inspiring stories and experiences. Through HMS Caroline, we’ll continue sharing the human experiences behind naval history, from life on board to the moments that shaped generations.

Because history does not live in ships alone. It lives in the people connected to them.

As Royal Navy Museums, we’re inviting you to get closer, discover these experiences and explore why they still matter today.

You’ll start to see shared content and updates from across our museums and collections at Royal Navy Museums.

We’d love you to be part of it.

🔘 HMS Caroline was equipped with the latest wireless set. It had limited range compared to today’s devices, but Captain Crooke was able to use Britain’s worldwide network of wireless and telegraph stations to communicate directly with the Admiralty in London.

Even though it could take days for a message to get through, it was a huge improvement from sending messages by ship, which could take months.

Pictured, is HMS Caroline’s 1915-16 Wireless Telegraphy team, including Boy Telegraphist, William Crick (middle row, extreme right).

🔎 Discover HMS Caroline’s incredible story and legacy when you take a guided tour.

Open Friday to Sunday | 8 guided tours throughout the day from 10am until 3.15pm.

A good night’s sleep… in basic conditions.

Life on board HMS Caroline was crowded and uncomfortable.

Engines, boilers and weaponry took priority, leaving the crew to fit around them. Most men slept in hammocks slung wherever there was space, ate where they could and kept their belongings close at hand.

Privacy was rare. Space was limited. Comfort was not guaranteed.

If you were an officer with a small cabin of your own, you were one of the lucky few. Step on board and see how life at sea really felt when you visit this April.

⏰ Open Wednesday to Sunday, until 12 April | Self guided tours | We're open for visits anytime from 10am to 3:15pm

Training for battle under Captain Crooke.

39-year-old Captain Crooke took command of HMS Caroline on 6 December 1914 and immediately set about working up his crew into an efficient team.

In just two days of intensive training, he had his men practising for day and night fighting, firing the ship’s guns and undertaking high-speed trials, all vitally important in conditioning his crew for the years of gruelling patrols of the North Sea in dreadful weather conditions that followed.

Caroline’s logbook shows a relentless list of gunnery exercises, torpedo exercises, fleet manoeuvres and mock attacks. Learn more when you visit!
