Just left school with no plans yet? You're not on your own.

For a lot of young people, figuring out what to do after school is the hardest part. Things like putting together a CV for the first time, having never done a job interview, or just not being sure what kind of work is right.

At Routes to Work, we work with young people in North Lanarkshire every day who are in exactly that position — school leavers who aren't sure where to turn or how to get started. Our team can help you with:
✏️ Building a CV that actually gets noticed — even if you've never had a job before
🗣️ Preparing for interviews so you go in feeling ready, not terrified
🔍 Exploring what kind of career could be the right fit and without any pressure to have it all figured out straight away

Whether you need help finding your first job or you're still working out what direction to go in, we're here for that 🩵

If you've got a young person at home who could do with a bit of help getting started, feel free to share this post their way as we would love to hear from them!

Part 3 is here and this one might be the most relatable yet.

"So, what are your strengths?" — four words that can make your mind go completely blank, even if you've got plenty to offer.

Suddenly you're sitting there wondering if "I can make a good spaghetti bolognese" counts as a job skill.

In this week's video, we're sharing some honest job interview tips on how to answer that exact question with what works and what REALLY doesn't 😂

Whether you're looking for help with your first job interview or you just haven't done one in a while, we hope this one helps.

And if you want proper interview prep beyond the videos, that's what we're here for.

At Routes to Work, we offer interview techniques training and a range of other support to help you feel confident and prepared when it matters most.

Meet Estelle.

Estelle had just come out of hospital and was struggling badly with her mental health. She was out of work disengaged from support services and was trying to find a way to move forward with her life.

That is when she found Routes to Work.

The support she received helped her build something she had been missing for a long time — structure, routine, and a sense of what she was capable of. Through Routes to Work, Estelle trained in massage therapy and Reiki, two things she never imagined she would be able to explore. Estelle was also referred to attend a Wellness Hub where her appointments gave her a daily rhythm that improved her mental health and began to restore her confidence, step by step.

And the change has been real. In Estelle's own words, she noticed herself becoming more independent, building her confidence and being able to manage her own mental health.

Estelle looks ahead to get into an admin job, and eventually moving into a role where she can help others get to where she has got to.

She says it herself: "Routes to Work has given me a bit of hope"

She was not totally ready to look for work when she came to us. She did not need to be. We do not ask you to be either. We start with you, where you are, and we work through your barriers together at a pace that suits you.

If Estelle's story sounds familiar, we would love to have a chat.

It's free, confidential and getting in touch with us WON'T affect your benefits.

Start where you are today 👇

Is the young person in your life putting off looking for work because they feel like whatever they go into for their first job will set the course for the rest of their life? This one is worth sharing with them 💡

Job anxiety around starting work for the first time is something we come across all the time - and it is one of the things that can stop young people from taking that first step altogether. Our biggest piece of career advice for school leavers? A first job is just that - a first job. That's not to say that staying in your first job isn't okay if you love it and feel fulfilled!

In Part 3 of our "Things Nobody Tells You About Your First Job" series, Laura explains why starting somewhere is always better than waiting for the perfect opportunity, and how every first job teaches you something valuable no matter where you end up. A great bit of career advice for school leavers and those still to enter work for the first time.

At Routes to Work, our Youth Services team supports young people across North Lanarkshire to take that first step into work with confidence - and we are with them every step of the way ✅

We've got some great news to share.

Routes to Work has been officially approved by the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland (REHIS) to deliver their Introduction to Food and Health course — and it's now part of our growing training offer.

The REHIS Food and Health course is free for all of our clients, and over just 3 hours you'll cover everything from an introduction to food and health, discovering healthy foods and nutrients, understanding energy and energy balance, exploring the influences on food intake, and how eating well supports your overall health and wellbeing — practical knowledge that stays with you well beyond the course.

And it doesn't stop there. Alongside this, our REHIS courses already cover a wide range of nationally recognised qualifications — from Food Hygiene certificates and Manual Handling to First Aid and Health & Safety. Our free training courses are all designed to build your confidence, add real weight to your CV, and move you closer to the job you want.

We'll work with you to figure out which courses make the most sense for where you want to go.

Words like these mean everything to us.

We know that losing hope after a long time out of work is a feeling that a lot of people can relate to. That quiet sense that things might not get better. That you've been out of the loop too long. That nobody really understands what you're going through.

But as this client found, it doesn't have to stay that way.

We're not just about helping you write a CV or finding you work, we offer real one-to-one community support alongside confidence building sessions, training and wellbeing support — all designed around you and what you need right now. Whether you're struggling with support for anxiety after being out of work or simply not feeling ready yet, we'll meet you where you are.

There's no expectation to look for work straight away, no judgement, and it won't affect your benefits.

If you've been wondering how to build confidence after unemployment in North Lanarkshire, we'd love to have a chat. Sometimes the first conversation is all it takes.

This week is Dementia Action Week 💙

Every three minutes, someone in the UK receives a dementia diagnosis. Behind every one of those moments is a person whose life is changed, and beside them, the people around them, whose world changes too.

This week, we want to hold both of those journeys in mind.

To people living with dementia, a diagnosis doesn’t need to end a career. This Dementia Action Week, let’s promote building workplaces that adapt, support and value every individual.

Caring for a loved one with dementia shouldn’t mean choosing between your family and a career.

At Routes to Work, we can support your journey through:

☑️ Local carer support in North Lanarkshire
☑️ Guidance on benefits and allowances you may be entitled to
☑️ Referrals to partners who can help
☑️ Free training to build your confidence
☑️ Building your support network so you feel less alone

Our support is free, completely confidential, and will not affect your benefits or carer's allowance when you get in touch with us.
