This page is designed as a place to discuss Belsay Hall, Castle & Gardens- to share tips for a great day out at the castle, upcoming events and news from the property. We love hearing the ideas and opinions of our social community, and encourage you to leave comments, photos, videos and links (‘content’) here on our page. However, in the interests of our whole community, by using this

The gardens at Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens are a place of constant change, care, and quiet dedication. They’re shaped not only by time and nature, but by the people who look after them day in, day out.

A huge thank you goes to the skilled gardeners and dedicated volunteers who work behind the scenes to keep this landscape thriving. From carefully maintaining historic planting schemes to encouraging wildlife-friendly spaces and managing the ever-evolving quarry gardens, their work is both practical and deeply creative.

Next time you wander through the grounds, take a second to appreciate not just the beauty around you, but the care that makes it possible. 🌱

A little piece of Belsay magic landed in the post!

We absolutely loved receiving this wonderful postcard from Toby, who has drawn his very own version of Belsay Castle on the back.

Once one of the grandest rooms in Belsay Hall, the library still holds an atmosphere of quiet elegance.

Dark wood panelling, carved details and towering proportions give the room a richness that hints at its former purpose. This would have been a space for reading, conversation and reflection, where the Middleton family could retreat from the bustle of the estate.

Though the shelves now stand empty, the library still feels full of history. Sunlight filtering through the tall windows catches the dark timber in changing ways throughout the day, while the silence of the room invites visitors to imagine what it must once have been like when the shelves were filled and the fire was lit.

Even without its books, the library remains one of the most atmospheric spaces in the Hall. It’s a place where the character of Belsay still lingers in every panel and shadow.

The turrets of Belsay Castle’s peel tower, dating back to the late 14th century, stand as enduring symbols of its medieval origins.

Rising above the surrounding landscape, they were designed not only as a statement of the family’s status and pride, but also for a practical purpose: defence. At a time when conflict and unrest were common, particularly along the border region, the peel tower served as protection against attacks and raids.

Today, the turrets remain some of the site’s most recognisable and atmospheric features.

Plant of the Month - Actinidia chinensis var. chinensis

Also known as the Chinese Gooseberry /Kiwi fruit, is native to China and is a woody vine, which climbs trees and other structures to reach the woodland canopy.

With beautiful heart shaped leaves and furry, rust coloured stems this plant rambles through trees and up the rocky face of East Quarry, creating an arched walkway through its tangled stems.

Beautiful peach-cream flowers followed by fleshy fruit create a stunning display from summer, followed by golden yellow autumn foliage.
