🔴 NO HELP WITH HEATING BILLS. WHAT HAVE NORTHUMBERLAND'S RURAL LABOUR MPs ACTUALLY DELIVERED?

Labour MPs Joe Morris and David Smith are both involved in parliamentary groups supposedly championing rural communities.

Yet yesterdays Government announcement on heating oil offers no new financial support to help families fill their tanks this winter.

Instead, Labour has announced they might bring in regulation of heating oil suppliers, stronger consumer protections and a review of payment arrangements at some point in the future.

All potentially welcome, but none of that reduces the cost of the next heating oil delivery.

David Smith is Secretary of Labour's Rural Research Group, chaired by Labour rural minister Jenny Riddell-Carpenter, the same minister who sparked controversy with her comments about country pubs, warm ale and black Labradors being part of a far-right vision of rural Britain.

Labour MP's should spend less time talking about their vision of the countryside and more time addressing the reality of living here.

The announcement offers no additional universal payment, no reduction in the 5% VAT on heating oil and no immediate price relief.

The Conservative Government organised £200 payments to eligible off-grid households during the energy crisis. Northumberland Conservatives have called for VAT on domestic heating oil to be scrapped.

Joe Morris and David Smith need to answer a simple question, what additional financial help have they actually secured for Northumberland families facing another expensive winter? None 👎

Rural communities need affordable heating, not more announcements about announcements.

I’m deeply disappointed by today’s Government announcement on heating oil.

I paid over £600 for 500 litres of heating oil for my cottage near Bamburgh. That won’t last us through the winter.

Thousands of families across rural Northumberland are facing similar costs, particularly those living in older properties which are expensive to heat.

The Government has announced they might regulate heating oil suppliers at some point in the future, but no new financial support to help households with the cost of filling their tanks this winter.

The last time prices spiked the Government provided £200 payments to eligible households using heating oil and other alternative fuels during the energy crisis.

Two weeks ago, I called for at least the 5% VAT on domestic heating oil to be scrapped like it has on electricity bills, providing some immediate relief for rural households.

Regulation in the future won’t pay the heating bills. Families need help with costs now.

🚨 FIRST THE A1. NOW THE BLYTH RELIEF ROAD.

The Labour Government has confirmed it will not fund the £55 million Blyth Relief Road.

In October 2023, Rishi Sunak's Conservative Government included the Blyth Relief Road in its Network North transport investment programme, alongside improvements to the A1.

Northumberland County Council has since progressed the Blyth scheme, secured planning permission and committed to contributing around 15% of the cost.

But the Government has now refused the funding needed to deliver it.

This follows Labour's decision to cancel the long-awaited A1 Morpeth to Ellingham dualling scheme, which had received development consent under the previous Conservative Government.

Two major road projects in Northumberland have now lost Government support.

Labour MPs David Smith and Ian Lavery have failed Northumberland. Their Government has withdrawn support for two major road improvements, leaving residents and businesses without the investment they were promised.

The Council will continue exploring alternative funding for Blyth, but residents deserve to know what improvements Labour intends to deliver instead.

Northumberland needs investment in its roads, not more broken promises and uncertainty.
