Abuse towards people in public life impacts staff as well as politicians. The findings of the Parliamentary Staff Wellness Working Group's (WWG) survey are shocking. Many of the findings and recommendations align with our Jo Cox Civility Commission, including the need for MPs' improved compliance with security arrangements to protect themselves and their staff --- and, as such, our democratic institutions.

🚌 Could the number 18 bus run later?

The number 18 was introduced following our lobbying for a service covering the Northgate area and is now widely used.

After a resident asked about later journeys, we raised this with Stagecoach. The current service operates around a school bus, but a possible timetable extension will now be discussed with council officers.

We’ll share an update when we hear more.

Out and About on Burton Road 🏡

Your Cottingham Labour Councillors been speaking with residents in the Burton Road area, sorry if we missed you!

Concerns raised included telegraph poles, parking, rats and mice. We’ll now follow up on all the issues reported.

🧐 In other parts of the country, mayors have been leading the way on all sorts of issues: but in Hull & East Yorkshire, 15 months in, Luke Campbell's got us stuck in the mud.

Since his election in May 2025, his Combined Authority:

📓 Spent £1.17 million on recruitment consultants' fees, to hire for senior executive positions

💸 Failed to spend its investment fund, or almost £1m of the mayor's "community fund"

🚌 Still hasn't taken on its transport powers, including for buses and major highways

The Do It for East Yorkshire (DIFEY) Community fund remains open for applications, with voluntary and community groups across the East Riding encouraged to apply for funding, for community-led projects.

Applications are open until Wednesday 30 September, or until all available funding has been allocated. A total of £200,000 will be invested in community projects.

Grants of between £1,500 and £5,000 are available to voluntary and community organisations, charities, and town and parish councils, for community-led projects that strengthen local communities and deliver meaningful social impact.

To support potential applicants, we are hosting a funding workshop on Wednesday 29 July at the Champney Treasure House in Beverley, from 1.30pm to 4.00pm.
