🚍 On this day 100 years ago, 5 October 1926, East Yorkshire Motor Services Ltd was registered.

This building plan in our collections shows designs for proposed new bus garage premises on St John Street in Bridlington, approved on 24 February 1937.

The plan shows a large garage with attached rooms for tyre storage, a mechanic's bench, a grease and oil store, toilets, a boiler room, a men's room, and a foreman's office. The drawings were produced by the architect at Crosville Motor Services Ltd, Crane Wharf, Chester, and submitted to the Borough Engineer and Surveyor of Bridlington.

✨ Happening this October- and the East Riding Archives are taking part! 'All About That Place' is a unique free learning event brought to you by the Society of Genealogists, and supported by the Society for One Place Studies, A Few Forgotten Women, British Association for Local History and Federation of Family History Societies.

Running over 10 days from Wednesday 7th to Friday 16th October, 'All About That Place' is packed with over 100 recorded 10-minute talks on genealogy and local history. You’ll learn research techniques, social history, tools, websites, archives, record keeping tips, ways of creating and sharing your findings… and much, much more!

Archivist Hannah Stamp will be presenting on Day 6 of this event showcasing Goole as seen through the East Riding Archives' collections.

📜 New venue and more exhibition content!🏺
Our expanded Travellers and Settlers exhibition with East Riding Museums and East Riding of Yorkshire Council's Equalities team is now on display at Sewerby Hall and Gardens, available until November 15th 2026.

This exhibition highlights a selection of stories found within documents in the East Riding Archives and artefacts from the East Riding Museums’ collections, evidencing that East Yorkshire has always been a place of diversity.

From the Mesolithic to the Modern Day, we present stories of ancient Britain, sanctuary seekers, workers, 'aliens', evacuees, freed slaves, interesting visitors, and more. In addition to celebrating the region’s diverse heritage, to highlighting the stories of today, the exhibition also shares contemporary oral histories and school pupils’ creations about their life and culture.

We had a busy day at the Local History Book Fair at Hull Minster last Saturday with our 'Ask an Archivist' stall. This annual event was organised by the East Yorkshire Local History Society, boasting over 25 groups and individuals celebrating all things local history 📚
It was also lovely to catch up with our fellow custodians of history Hull History Centre.

Photographs in the archives can show us places that no longer exist, and which you may have thought were erased from memory.

This photograph from 1954 shows housing designated for slum clearance along Princes Gardens in Beverley. The properties were subsequently demolished and the site is now occupied by the Champney Treasure House.

Tree Stories is a project by Hull & East Riding Friends of The Earth to inspire care for our local trees.

🌳 81 Tree Stories and counting!

Since our launch on 22 April 2026, our local community has shared 81 wonderful individual stories about the trees we live alongside... and we just want to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who took the time to get involved in Round 1 of the project to begin planting in East Yorkshire's Digital Forest 💚

Now, Round 2 is open!

We’re inviting Hull & East Riding residents to tell us the story of a local tree that means something. Maybe it’s a tree you’ve walked past for years, one you played under as a child, a favourite spot in your neighbourhood, a local folk tale about a tree, a tree with an interesting perspective on things, or simply a tree you think deserves a little more attention.

Your stories will become part of an ever-growing communal digital forest - bringing together the memories, history and everyday moments that show just how important and wonderful our trees are.

And we’ve got a challenge for you…

🌱 Can we reach 150 tree stories by the end of the year?

Round 2 is open for new submissions until New Year’s Eve (31 December 2026)

So, if there’s a local tree with a story to tell, we’d love to hear it. Get involved, share your story and help us grow a digital forest in the online commons! 🌳

Over 25+ groups and individuals showcasing Hull and East Yorkshire's local history will be back with stalls for this year's Local History Book Fair at Hull Minster on Saturday 19th September.
This event is organised by the East Yorkshire Local History Society.

We will be there providing you with an opportunity to ask an archivist your research questions! We look forward to seeing you there between 10 am -3:30pm.
