Local Government reorganisation plans were released today. This is going to make things even more difficult to deliver services with a greater area to cover and fewer people to provide council tax.
It’s not all bad news though. Labour run Exeter and Plymouth are going to come out of this very well indeed…..
This is party politics at its worst.
The people of Devon have been completely ignored in the governments decision to carve the county up into 4 unequal parts.
Exeter and Plymouth are currently run by Labour administrations, and surprise surprise, they've been handed a model which concentrates the economically profitable areas into new "Greater Exeter" and "Greater Plymouth".
The "Rest of Devon" as they called us in their proposal, will have the most spread out population - making services extremely expensive to deliver. We've been left with 5000km+ of roads to look after, with a very small council tax base to pull from. They've taken the majority of the hospitals, both universities, all of the major bus and rail interchanges - basically anything profitable and high-tech has gone to Labour-run councils. We're left looking after Devon's rural children and elderly populations, we've got to look after the farmers, the rivers, the national parks, and our beautiful coastlines. All on a shoestring budget.
The rest of us have been set up to fail. These Labour councillors and ministers should be ashamed.
