On top of the world! Nerys Lamerick, our North Wales & North West Regional Representative recently abseiled down the Leasowe Lighthouse in an event organised by the Friends of Leasowe Lighthouse. Nerys volunteers at the lighthouse twice a month supporting this wonderful lighthouse. We're proud of you Nerys!

This coming Monday, we have a free creative stories workshop for young people aged 11-16.

This Curious Minds workshop will bring a group together to process and play with our thoughts and feelings around a chosen text, poem or short story. We will combine the ideas and feelings that we have made, delivering a new story from them through craft, art-making and drama!

Curious Minds are a North West based organisation tackling unequal access to creativity and culture for children and young people.

The workshop takes place from 16.30 - 18.30 on Monday 17th October.

A picture of the Sunset from Leasowe Lighthouse tonight as sadly we have to announce that Geoff Brown our long standing Chairman of The Friends of Leasowe Lighthouse CIO has very recently passed away.

Geoff was totally dedicated to the aims and values of Leasowe Lighthouse and was often on site when no one else could be. He would be beavering away at fixing any of the myriad of things that needed his attention. He had a special battle with the water ingress through the Lamp Room windows on more than one occasion.

He also welcomed many people to the Lighthouse on open days and sometimes on other days when he was working outside on something he would just stop and talk to people who enquired about the building.

Geoff also lead the Amateur Radio side of the Lighthouse, ( his call sign was G4WUA ) running our Ham radio weekend in August under the call sign GB4LL also Teaching many new beginners in the hobby to get them through their license exam and helping with the morse code classes run by the late David Oakden G3UFO.

Geoff was also a key member of the small team of trustees who negotiated the transfer of the Lighthouse from Wirral Council to The Friends of Leasowe Lighthouse CIO culminating in the signing of the 99 year lease in 2016.

We will all miss Geoff immensely and hope that his spirit will help those of us remaining to acheive our goals.

In honour of that we feature the Stevenson siblings who were Engineers to the Northern Lighthouse Board.

Left to right is Alan Stevenson (1807-65) who was Engineer 1843-53, then David Stevenson (1816-86) who was Engineer 1853-81 and Thomas Stevenson (1818-87) who was Engineer 1853-87.

Between the three of they built some of the best known and most loved lighthouses in Scotland.

We will review the situation in the Spring of 2021.

Only two more open days at Bidston Lighthouse this season: Sunday 6th October and Sunday 13th October. Guided tours at 1, 2, 3 and 4pm.

2019 opening hours Bidston Lighthouse will open to the public on: the first Saturday of each month from April to September, and every Sunday from 7th April until Sunday 8th September (except Sunday 5th May). Guided tours start on the hour (at 12 noon, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm) each day. Doors open at 11:45a...

How much has changed: Orfordness Lighthouse in 1951 taken from the air in a national project to record Britain from the skies... note the distance of the Lighthouse from the sea (this distance actually increased- in the early 80s it was about 90m from the waves). It’s a rare shot showing the cottages and their gardens with the perimeter wall... the families had already moved out in 1936 but the cottages would not be demolished until the 1960s. Fascinating picture, so changed now.
