Massive thank you to the organisers of the Crawford Fun Day for inviting us to attend! We had a great time showing people around the appliance, telling them about the role of a firefighter, and getting an opportunity to deliver water and wildfire safety information.

On our travels again last night, we attended the National Training Centre in Cambuslang for BA training. The crew did a great job to keep themselves orientated and rescue casualty simulators whilst wearing blindfold masks to imitate the low visibility faced in fire conditions.

🔥 Abington Fire Station Needs You! 🔥

Daytime availability between 7am and 5pm? You could be exactly who we’re looking for.

We’re looking for people right here in our community who can provide on‑call cover during the day — and you might be surprised at how many jobs and lifestyles fit perfectly with being an on‑call firefighter.

👩‍💻 Work from home?
If you’re based locally and can step away from the laptop when your pager goes, you could make a huge difference. Many of our crew balance home‑working with responding to emergencies.

🌙 Work night shifts or mixed shift patterns?
If your days are free, even a few hours of availability could help strengthen our daytime cover. You don’t need to be available 24/7 — just reliably within those daytime windows.

🏡 Live or work within 8 minutes of the station?
That’s the key. If you’re close by and want to support your community, we’ll give you all the training, equipment, and support you need.

Being an on‑call firefighter is:
• Paid
• Flexible
• Fully trained
• A chance to build new skills
• A way to make a real impact in Abington and the surrounding villages.

If you’ve ever thought “maybe one day”, this might be your moment. Send a message for more information or pop into the station on Tuesday evenings 7pm till 10pm for a chat — we’d love to tell you more.

📢 Please share this post — you might help us reach someone perfect for the role.📢

Your community needs daytime cover. Your availability could save lives.

Training on Tuesday night, the team were practicing shore based rescue techniques using throw-lines. The lines allow us to rescue people who have gotten into difficulty in the water. Where an immediate rescue is not possible, they allow us to stabilise the person until our water rescue colleagues arrive to remove them from the water. More ladder drills as well, this time involving practice for pitching a ladder over an obstruction, which can be slightly more challenging than a standard pitch.
