Sexed the new hogs yesterday - we have one of each! ‘Dean’ came in with quite a few ticks and as he starts to feel better the little ones grow and can be seen more easily. Once I’m happy he’s tick-free he can be released as he’s gaining weight nicely now. ‘Torvill’ is far more shy but is also gaining weight nicely too - I’d like her to be over 300g before she leaves us. Pic is of Dean ❤️

FLEAS! A lot of people worry about hedgehog fleas but they are are hedgehog specific so they won’t bite you, or infest your cat/dog. Most hogs have a few fleas and they do no harm at all. Last night we got in very young and tiny hogs weighing 200g and 280g and they were infested with fleas. This is the bottom of one of their cages this morning after treatment 😱 we will check/treat for other parasites before releasing.

The tiny ‘Brooker’ came in to us yesterday as he was out and about looking a bit sluggish during the day. We were a bit worried about his legs as he seems to have trouble tucking them in when he curls up. X-rays showed nothing is broken so a bit of TLC and he can go home soon.

Tonight the first of our winter over wintering hogs was released back to the garden he came from. Spike was an underweight juvenile that more the doubled in size since the autumn. Next up will be Herbert who doesn’t have a home to go back to so he’ll be going to a very hog friendly garden a stones throw away from Spike!

If you find a hedgehog in need of help during the current cold snap please pop it on a warm (not hot) hot water bottle covered in a tea towel, or next to a bottle filled with warm water. We are getting juvenile hogs in that are underweight but also freezing cold - that bit of warmth could make all the difference.

This is the rather glorious ‘Houdini’ this morning…living up to his name and trying to escape (again) while I clean out his cage. This hedgehog never stops and likes to climb, he’s a real character. I’ve started adding in a bit of environmental enrichment to keep him happy and stop him getting stressed - I use a loo roll tube stuffed with dry leaves and the occasional piece of his favourite kibble.

Today ‘Gladys and the Pips’ were released in their new home. They are still a very tight unit so they’ve been released together and the hoglets will gradually leave Mum over the coming days. This is a picture of one of the boys exploring his new home for the first time. Pictures like this make it all worthwhile ❤️

Six weeks ago we got a call from a builder who was clearing a site and about to start demolition- he’d uncovered a hedgehog nest right in the middle. With no choice but to move them we went out to find the hoglets were just a few hours old. After lots of conversations with Vale Wildlife Hospital & Rehabilitation Centre ‘Gladys and the Pips’ were put in a cage in the quietest place we could find and our only contact was changing food and water once a day. There was a very high chance that Gladys would abandon or kill her babies if she felt they were under threat. In the early days Gladys did consider abandoning them on more than one occasion but she ended up being an excellent mum! We did lose a couple along the way but that would likely have happened in the wild where only 50% of litters survive. Next week they go to their forever home 🥰❤️🥰

The best days are when they are well enough to return home ❤️ It’s our policy to always return hogs to where they were found, as long as it’s safe to do so. weighing in at over 1.1kg this morning Henrietta is a huge female that we are keen to get back to making hoglets asap.

This is the rather beautiful ‘Henrietta’. She came in with very itchy skin but it seems this may have been brought about by a loss of condition after she developed a nasty snuffle. She is now being treated and after a touch and go 24 hours she’s starting to sound a little better, although still not out of the woods.

Lots of poorly hogs around at the minute and in the last 24 hours we have had the highs and lows that come with hedgehog rescue. A lovely big 975kg hog with a skin complaint that is doing well and a really poorly hog that had been hit by a car and broken it’s back…no choice but to put it out of its misery. If you have a poorly hog give us a shout asap!
