Please think twice before lighting an outdoor fire πŸ”₯

Despite the cooler weather, Bedfordshire remains extremely dry and the fire severity index is still very high.

Since the Government emergency alert on 14 August, we've attended 37 outdoor fires, and more than 180 outdoors fires since the start of August.

Please avoid all activity that could start a fire. By taking simple precautions, residents and businesses can help protect their communities and reduce demand on emergency services.

We just want to give a shout out to some of the often unseen heroes: our Fire Control team ❀️

This weekend alone, they received 495 calls while supporting a major incident, ensuring that the right resources are sent to the right place at the right time, making this one of the busiest weekends this year.

So far this August, our Fire Control team have answered 1,281 emergency calls – already more than the 1,189 calls received during the whole of August 2025.

And then is on top of having handled a busy July – with more than 20 per cent more calls in July this year compared to last.

From taking 999 calls, mobilising crews, gathering critical information and supporting both those on incident groups and to members of the public calling in – the professionalism, resilience and ability of our Fire Control Firefighters to stay calm under pressure cannot be understated.

A big thank you to every member of our Fire Control team for your hard work, dedication and commitment during this exceptionally busy period. We could not do this without you

An Amber Heat-Health Alert has been issued across much of England from 9am today (Tuesday 11 August) until 9am on Friday 14 August.

Hot weather can affect anyone, but older adults, young children and those with existing health conditions are particularly vulnerable.

To stay safe in the heat:

β€’ Avoid the sun and strenuous activity between 11am and 3pm
β€’ Drink plenty of fluids
β€’ Keep curtains or blinds closed in sun-facing rooms
β€’ If you're outside, stay in the shade, wear sunscreen and a hat, and carry water with you

Please also check in on family, friends and neighbours who may need extra support to stay cool and hydrated.

If you're concerned about your health or someone else's, call NHS 111.

Quick question... could you tell our Control Firefighters exactly where you are from this photo?

If you're out enjoying Bedfordshire's countryside, it can be easy to assume you know where you are. But if you spot a fire or get into trouble, giving your exact location isn't always as straightforward as you might think.

That's where what3words can help. The free app has divided the world into 3m x 3m squares, each with a unique three-word address, helping emergency services find you quickly when every second counts.

Download the app before heading out so you know your exact location, even when you're not quite sure where you are. It could make all the difference. πŸ“±πŸš’
